London dispatch reports renewed German withdrawals northeast of Chateau Thierry on the Marne front. The article notes two separate attacks, one Friday and one Saturday, as Allied forces press the line amid ongoing operations in northern France.
Germany sends a peace note via an Amsterdam telegraph citing Vorwärts Berlin. It urges no western annexations or indemnities, keeps treaty terms with Russia and Roumania, and calls for self determination at a round table. It omits Belgium and the Polish question from decisive change and proposes freedom of the seas with limited coaling rights.
London reports July 24 that German casualties since July 15 reach 180000 with high losses. Reuter correspondent notes 180000 killed or wounded and Henri Rideau cites about 25000 German prisoners taken in the Franco American counter offensive.

Word has arrived of the drowning death of David Parsells at Ocean City New Jersey. He is the eldest son of Mrs Parsells the well known temperance lecturer who has spoken in New Castle and across the county on several occasions.
A thunderstorm struck a large barn owned by William H. Gilkey six miles northwest of New Wilmington in Shenango township Mercer county. The fire destroyed the barn and its contents valued near $10,000, with a horse and pig killed. Hay, grain, and farming tools were lost, and nearby sheds and a corn crib burned. Insurance is presumed but not disclosed.
The county draft board reports 640 men sent to training camps since the draft law began. Of these, 630 are white and 10 are negroes. Six men are in the July call. In 1917 class there are 26 white and four negroes. in 1918 class there are 57 white and two negroes. Fifty cases remain before the district board or medical advisory panel.
The city draft list selects nine men to depart for Camp Wadsworth in South Carolina within five days after August 5. Departure date not yet set. Labeled draftees include Edward Parks, Carl Smith, Bernardino Parotta, Ralph Whittaker, Angelo Ross, Eustacino Francazio, Frank Peterson, Antonin Boro, and Constanken Satko with listed addresses.
Washington officials reject Berlin Vorwaerts reports of a new German peace plan. They say no new German proposal will distract from winning the war and that such terms would insult American intelligence. Officials insist Germany knows its peace terms if it truly seeks peace.
Washington July 24 En forcement of the work or fight order would deplete baseball ranks so the season could not be completed. Baseball magnates submitted a brief to Provost Marshal General Crowder and will await his decision after a meeting with Secretary Baker who may alter his Ainsmith case ruling if evidence shows the game would be doomed.
Washington reports the fourth Liberty loan drive will start September 29. Treasury department has not issued an official statement. The update comes from sources in the capital.
Gloucester Mass July 24 Naval authorities told owners of the submarined fishing schooner Robert and Richard that all hands aboard were accounted for and safe shortly after noon today.
Police report a ring was taken from the residence of Albert Barnes at 721 West Washington Street yesterday. Detectives have no suspects or clues at this time.
The advance of French and American forces between the Aisne and Marne tightens the German retreat toward the key supply center at Fere en Tardenois. Allied troops push gains north and south of the Oureq river. several villages retaken as the first week of the counteroffensive ends with the Allies in control along the Marne Aisne Rheims axis.
Harrisburg report cites Provost Marshal Crowder, calling for about 25,000 white soldiers and a proportional number of colored men in August. With 19,419 white and 6,680 colored men left in Class 1, the Aug total could exhaust the pool unless more join. Navy and other reclassifications halted. county farm agents with state agriculture certs exempt.
The thirty three draftees are selected to depart the city Friday at 5 48 p m by Pittsburg and Lake Erie railroad for Camp Lee Virginia. All men are expected to be on hand for the trip.
The city draft board completed reclassification of men born abroad who have secured first citizenship papers and are unmarried. They have been placed in class one and many have been added to that draft category.
Unconfirmed report from Babylon New York says a German submarine was sunk six miles off Fire Island after aircraft bombarded it. An aviator allegedly witnessed the sinking and returned to Bay Shore station for aid, but no Navy confirmation was available. Five more crewmen were reportedly picked up by rescuers.
Alfred E. Smith, president of the New York city board of aldermen, heads the Democratic state ticket after delegates to an unofficial conference approved the slate this morning. The vote affirmed Smith as standard bearer for the party.
Four city draftees will be inducted into the service on July 2 and depart for Camp Forrest in Lytle Georgia. Selected under the nation’s want column No 3 the group includes Leo Philip Strizzi and W D Stewart as photographers Raymond Anthony as a construction foreman and Thomas E Miller as an electrician.
The army recruiting station reported two new enlistees in field artillery Karl R. Douglas of Edenburg R D No 1 and Cliff E Porte of Leasure Avenue. They left last night for Columbus barracks.
Washington July 24 The government should take over control of all aeroplane plants with government contracts. This will be the committee's principal recommendation in its forthcoming report to the Senate. Hearings continue and the report may not be filed before August 1.
Paris reports heavy fighting southwest of Rheims as German counter attacks near Vrigny fail to break through. Artillery rages between the Aisne, Marne and Rheims with activity in Courton wood and Bois Du Roi while French lines hold firm.
AMSTERDAM July 24 ex czarevitch Alexis of Russia died of exposure a few days after his father’s execution by Red Guards Berlin dispatch quoted by Lokal Anzeiger. This is the second report of the ex czarevitch’s death recently.
