Bell Telephone Co warns unions FTW and PTG of cutting one week of retroactive pay if a $57 million wage package is not accepted by midnight. The three-year contract would raise pay about 18.3 percent plus fringe benefits and a $7 weekly allowance for Pittsburgh and Philadelphia workers. Talks resume in federal mediators office.
Haaretz reports Mrs Golda Meir will not seek re election after the 1973 general elections and named Defense Minister Moshe Dayan as successor. Ben Gurion discussed Dayan as PM candidate with Meir while dismissing Allon and Sapir. Dayan rose to power after 1967. The PMO denied the report.
Four people were killed when a private twin engine plane crashed shortly after takeoff at Tri-State Airport in Huntington West Virginia. Victims include Robert S Oxnard 52 of Ashland Kentucky wife Dorothy 47 daughter Dorothy 11 and granddaughter Denise Oxnard 4 all of Alexandria Huntington County Pennsylvania. This crash raises total deaths at the airport to 82 in the past nine months including a October 29 military crash and a Marshall University team charter disaster killing 75 people.
Seven unions signed a two year contract with the Postal Service granting about 750000 workers an average 1710 pay raise, costing over 1 billion dollars, in exchange for approval of mail handling automation. CWA members end Bell system strike after a 33 percent wage and benefit boost over three years pending mail ballot approval. Some locals defy return to work in New York and other cities with picket lines resumed. Rail talks continue as UTU presses dispute with Union Pacific and Southern Railway.
The House Banking Committee approved a $2 billion emergency loan fund to keep Lockheed Aircraft Corp from bankruptcy and to aid other distressed major firms. The measure mirrors a Senate bill, with votes 17 to 14 and 18 to 16, and supports a $250 million loan guarantee for Lockheed to continue the TriStar jet bus program.
The House Foreign Affairs Committee approved a bill authorizing 3.4 billion dollars in foreign aid for this year. It would halt military aid to Greece and Pakistan while adding 100 million dollars for East Pakistani refugee relief. The panel rejected a full overhaul of the aid program and extended the existing approach for two years. Greece would lose all military aid until free elections are allowed. Pakistan aid would be suspended.
A spectacular general alarm fire in Sharon, Pennsylvania, destroyed the DeForrest Buick Cadillac Motor Co., the city’s oldest car dealer. Damage may exceed $500,000, and a nearby house burned while two other homes were damaged, leaving five families homeless. Three firefighters were injured and treated, as crews from six towns battled the blaze for nearly five hours beginning in the dealership’s display room. Officials cite a possible spark from electrical equipment as the origin.
