Three youths from Youngstown were rescued after becoming lost in a cave maze at Harlansburg. Rescue teams retrieved them with no serious injuries reported.
Astronauts John Young and Michael Collins report feeling great as Gemini 10 wraps up a three day mission. They prepared for a splashdown 544 miles east of Cape Kennedy with recovery ships led by Guadalcanal awaiting. Weather was reported as good but not ideal for the final touchdown.
In 1951 the Pa 168 project opened local caves owned by Anna Johnson heirs and leased to Challis Bruce who planned a historical site but abandoned the effort due to $100 000 costs. Visitors included Vera Bruce Andrew Mellon’s daughter and college groups while three boys were lost for 13 hours but recovered. Local Highways officials then closed the cave to stop onlookers amid safety concerns.
Two 15 year olds Harold Hartman and James Mancini and their cousins Robert and Robin Pastore along with Louis Hartman endured a daylong cave exploration near Harlansburg. A 13hour nighttime search by volunteers and state police recovered Robert Pastore about 8 pm near cave mouth. He stayed calm as he was guided to safety with the aid of Owens brothers flashlight and batteries.
Five persons, including a National Guard officer, were shot and wounded as across the city roving bands of youths fired hit and run and used molotov cocktails. The hall fire at the University Party Center caused about 100000 in damage while four policemen were injured in traffic crashes during rapid response. Police say the violence appears more organized and seeks to stretch resources.
A clergyman said Richard Speck expressed remorse after a 20 minute jail visit. Speck asked for another talk, refused to see relatives, and spoke of his relationship with God. Public defender Gerald Getty gained permission to defend him.
Robert C. Kelly aged 70 of Ellwood City and Minnie Shaffer aged 77 of 209 Hillcrest Ave are listed in the death records dated Thursday July 21 1966. The notices provide ages and residences for the deceased.
