U S Air Force says B 29s halted Communist rail moves through Seoul and allied carrier planes claimed 51 enemy warplanes shot down in North Korea. Recon photos show Seoul railyards heavily damaged including shops with capacity for 2 500 locomotives yearly.

Tonight's low temperatures in western Pennsylvania run 50 to 55 degrees, similar to last night. A youngster climbed the Shenango River bridge for a steeplejack note. Homer Garland Odom 23 of Birmingham killed a 71 year old storekeeper during a robbery attempt. Claude Sims 31 of Birmingham murdered a railroad night watchman. Joe Keth Jr 20 of Birmingham bludgeoned two men in a drunken rage died at 12 40 p m.
The Defense Department said swift moves to call as many as half a million men for the Korean War are in part due to lengthening American casualty lists. A spokesman indicated sections of the National Guard may be called next to plug gaps in home based ground forces.
Harrisburg July 21 A two way radio network will speed communications on the Pennsylvania Turnpike when completed next year. Bedford will be headquarters for the system with sets at interchanges maintenance buildings tunnels police and turnpike headquarters and in emergency trucks and patrol cars. Chairman T J Evans called it the worlds most modern radio communication system.
Congressional Armed Services committees approved removing all manpower limits and froze active service terms for one year. Senate and House panels authorized 12 month retention for officers and enlisted personnel, with a House vote 18 to 1 and Senate approval seen as likely. Rep. Towe opposed. Mentions pending floor action and link to Truman crisis message.
New York July 21. More than 3000 known subversive aliens are under close surveillance as the U S moves toward semi wartime status. Many are Russian born and dispersed in New York Pittsburgh Los Angeles San Francisco Cleveland and Buffalo. Authorities know who they are and where they go. Some were arrested previously for membership in groups seeking to overthrow the government. Deportation attempts failed as many are from iron curtain nations. Courts limit detention on Ellis Island or in jail to a reasonable time. They are released on bond or parole based on assessed danger.
The 229th field artillery unit plans to depart for Indiantown Gap for summer camp training as Korea’s situation prompts new orders. It is unclear whether they will be retained as a home defense unit or proceed to active duty abroad. Lt. Col. George F. Mitchell said supplementary orders are expected but not yet received.
The Defense Department said it has received no report of any kind on Maj. Gen. William F. Dean's whereabouts in Korea. An Army spokesman at a Pentagon briefing said official queries to Tokyo failed to verify missing person reports and that Dean's personal situation is not serious, though he is not at his headquarters.
Tokyo dispatch reports hope for word on Maj. Gen. William F. Dean, leader of the last rear guard during Taejon fighting. His Korean interpreter, wounded in Taejon, escaped from the Communist captured city and believes Dean may have evaded entrapment. Previous word came from INS war correspondent Charles D. Rosescrans.

Philadelphia biochemist Harry Gold, 39, pleaded guilty to supplying atomic secrets to the Soviet Union. Federal Judge James P. McGranery postponed sentencing pending a Federal Probation Office investigation with fate to be learned in the fall. U.S. Attorney Gerald A. Gleeson would not reveal his recommen dation. Some observers offered early reactions.
White House officials say President Truman will meet with business heads before imposing industry wide controls on steel and vital materials. The talks aim to gauge the scale of the allocations problem and secure industry cooperation while policymakers finalize the Korean war program priorities.
In Georgia two National Guard F-51 fighters collided in flight near Springfield. First Lt. Bayard M. Peach of Columbia South Carolina was killed. First Lt. Robert G. Hooks of Columbia suffered a compound fracture of the right leg after parachuting into a pine tree.

American 24th Division dug in near Yongdong after losing Taejon, Yongdok coastal towns burned by naval shelling, and South Korean troops retook Yechon as Allied countermeasures held the eastern front.
General MacArthur credited Lt. Gen. Walton H. Walker with reducing Communist infiltration of guerrillas in refugee groups in Korea. He said methods remain confidential but that Red infiltration is “reduced to manageable proportions” and could approach zero.
