Gun battle and pursuit erupt near midnight at the Cooper apartments on North street. Officers exchange shots with a burglar who was spotted at work in the rear of the building and escapes as police believe a Confederate posted to warn him.
In addition to a bullet piercing a window at Mrs. Wilson’s home, another bullet shattered the rear door and entered the residence of Dr. Foster on North Mercer street. Neighbors reported no injuries and police are investigating the shootings.
A burglar fired on detectives and officers in a rear building pursuit that extended several blocks. Detective Logan, Officer Smith, Chief Young and Hilliers chased the suspect through alleys after a midnight alert from Dr Cooper and Mamie Barclay. The encounter began when a shot was fired in the dark at Logan and Smith near the Lawrence club.
Police investigated a Sunday assault on a 10 year old girl near Lawrence School on Mahoning avenue. The girl Mary Germany identified a foreigner who bound her eyes and mouth with handkerchiefs before fleeing. No arrests were made. the suspect reportedly returned to his boarding house but again fled.
In addition to Patrol drivers ei and Phillips who are learned to handle the auto patrol, four other officers will be taught. Smith and Taylor of the night force and Hilliers and Tyrrell of the day force will be instructed to operate the machine when needed.
Chief of Police Young reports a Chicago message claiming Spencer Barnes, arrested last week on North Mill street, was married in Chicago and also in this city. His wife here denies knowledge of a Chicago marriage. An information for larceny will be filed today as investigators probe his alleged conduct in Chicago and Camden.
Mrs. Anna C. Creape aged 105 died at North Sewickley near Ellwood City after moving from Philadelphia 80 years ago. Survived by one son, four daughters, 24 grandchildren and 40 great grandchildren. Funeral held at North Sewickley church with Rev. Mc Cracken officiating. Interment in North Sewickley cemetery.
Masons have begun work on the foundation wall for Ed Roberts new block on East Washington street near County Line. The cellar was quarried from solid rock and the project has progressed since early spring.
An employee of the New Castle Traction Company received their bi monthly pay as the payroll increases due to ongoing improvements and extra crews needed to manage traffic to Cascade Park.
Dr. Jesse R. Cooper Ira Fulkerson Frank Fraker L. D. Nelson and Burley Falls leave for Ontario Canada to camp for several weeks. They bring ample fishing tackle and anticipate setting big records.
Councilmen used the new auto patrol wagon to visit Moravia Street Ralph Avenue and South Jefferson Streets and hear complaints. Howard Phillips drove the vehicle and returned them safely to city hall. They checked Moravia Street paving water runoff on Ralph Avenue and the poor condition of Sharpe Street cobble surface. Action on these issues will follow in council.
Fred Trautman of Appleton Wisconsin in the Wisconsin league extended his scoreless inning streak to 650 by throwing nine innings without allowing a run, surpassing Walter Johnson’s 45 inning mark. The 650 innings came across four games with 13 and 15 inning efforts. Trautman, a Bucyrus Ohio high school graduate nicknamed Flopper, is the record holder.
The two year and nine month old son Val Walczcak of 117 Oakland Avenue died Sunday night from burns suffered last week after falling into a tub of hot water. Funeral services are set for Tuesday at 8 AM at St Mary's Polish Catholic Church with burial in St Joseph's Cemetery.
A fake murder call led County Detective Dunlap to dispatch an auto with Pete Hilliers Bill Tyrell and off duty officers plus a News reporter. They sped toward Eastbrook on Croton Avenue then Eastbrook road as a driver rushed to the scene in a hair raising pursuit. Continued on Page Four.
The initiative effort failed as only 654 signatures were gathered of the required 936. Clerk Brown closed the petition on Saturday after only 80 names were added that day and 100 more during the post re opening period. The move targeted a recent city police ordinance.
Conrad Hughes of New Sheffield Pa. is badly injured at the Shenango Valley hospital after falling under the wheels of a Pittsburg & Lake Erie train in the local yards. The carpenter may avoid leg amputation. Fred Houston of Pittsburgh visits attorney Roy Mercer in the city.
The body found in Mount Hope cemetery Urbana is examined after exhumation to identify Katherine Winters, the missing 9-year-old daughter of Dr. William A. Winters. Detectives traced the body from Florida as authorities and the Winters family await confirmation.
A Sunday night crash two miles from Chicora on the East Brady road involved a touring car from Pittsburg and a Chicora owned vehicle driven by O Kammerer. Three people were hurt including Mrs Jeffrey who faced serious injuries. Mrs Burns and Mr Jeffery were cut or bruised. The Kammerers escaped with minor injuries. Mrs Jeffrey was taken to Butler for recovery.
Police had a quiet Sunday night after a bustling Saturday. They investigated a suspicious person near the Norris block with no arrests, and checked a report of a colored woman accosting a man at Allen and Taylor streets but found no trace.
Judge Criswell of Venango County confirmed the trustees report for the P. L. Kimberly estate at a Mercer court session. He ruled on disbursements, noting several heirs reside in New Castle.
Health officials say no new contagion cases were reported to the department on Saturday or today, indicating stability in the city’s health status.
Judge Porter heard an equity case today with Jack Paden suing S B Shelley over an oil lease on the Edward Kincaid farm near Hillsville. Paden had secured a preliminary injunction restraining Shelley from entering the property and drilling, with heirs including Mrs Charles Kelley John Kincaid and Jacob Paden involved. The will left the farm to the wife for life with remainder to the heirs.
The Mariners party of Raymond Smith Herbert Kirk Paul Washburn Robert Slough Archey Cubbison and John Edgar returned home from a 16 day cruise down the Allegheny River from Salamanca to Franklin. They landed at Franklin harbor under a flag of truce after landing near an Indian appearance and faced fort guns. The voyage featured bullfrogs snakes waterdogs ferocious fireflies mosquitoes and bats and will be detailed in a book by Raymond Smith.
Police failed to capture a man suspected of attacking a girl after a railroad train blocked Moravia street crossing delaying officers en route to Mahoning avenue where the suspect escaped.
The G G G Ken sington and their families will hold a park picnic Friday at 6 30 PM instead of Thursday. The event gathers members for a family social in the park setting.

Carnival Co. presses to stage events in the city despite Mayor Tyler announcing no new permits for carnivals. He says two lodge carnivals might be possible only if local lodges propose it, but otherwise he will not grant permission. Three companies have sought permits and been refused.
