Pike Tunnel Crash Kills Man and Wife in Turnpike Blaze
In the Laurel Hill tunnel near Somerset Pennsylvania a steel laden tractor trailer and a car collided and ignited a fire killing Elmer J. Brunswald 78 and Maude Brunswald 75 of Tampa Florida. Thirty seven were overcome by smoke and treated at Somerset Community Hospital as 25 cars were pulled from the tunnel. Traffic was detoured for 34 hours as fire crews wore gas masks and battled the blaze. Truck driver Merle Butsey 42 of Staunton Virginia reported a westbound car crossed the lane into his path.
