President Truman and Prime Minister Churchill met for the first time at Potsdam as the big three conference began with delays. Churchill's arrival followed Truman’s, and the official opening and talks with Stalin were postponed to Tuesday.
Japanese cities Muroran Kamaishi Kushiro and other targets suffered heavy damage as Adm. Halsey’s Third Fleet wrecked ships and aircraft. Nimitz reported 108,060 tons of enemy shipping sunk or damaged over two days. McCain’s task force claimed nine ships and six small crafts sunk.

Guam July 16. Twentieth Air Force says Gifu is the latest Japanese city largely destroyed by B 29 incendiary bombs. Three fourths of the 172,000 population city burned, with nearly three square miles of built up area afire. Other top burning cities include Takamatsu and Tokushima. Ichinomiya suffered minor damage. Total fire bombed urban area now about 136 square miles across 1638 cities and targets.
Aboard the U S S Iow A off Hokkaido on July 16 a task force including 16 inch guns of a 45 000 ton battleship opened fire on Muroran port for 98 minutes. Admiral Halsey’s third fleet blasted Ushisura Wan Volcanic Bay with more than 2000 tons of shells, aiming at enemy holdings as observers noted towers and stacks vanishing from Nippon Steel Plant. The blast damaged several buildings and disrupted the port. Continued on Page two.
Manila reports Allied near capture of the last Jap held field center in eastern Borneo. General MacArthur says Australian Seventh Division units push north to within five miles of the center at Saimbodtja as Dutch and Australian troops finish a six day battle for Mount Batochamypar, east of Balikpapan, aided by light naval and air support.
The Brussels radio said the Belgian cabinet was summoned for a 2 p.m. session tomorrow. Catholic ministers met at the finance ministry after the cabinet met earlier. The cabinet was to reconvene at 8 p.m. tonight.
American forces seized Theva Shima and Aguni Shima in the Okinawa group with unopposed landings in June. Fleet Admiral Nimitz said these two islands lie 173 and 30 miles west of Okinawa respectively, completing occupation of satellites west of Okinawa.
Norah Carpenter the unwed mother of quadruplets from Heanor Derby England will travel to Pittsburgh Pennsylvania to live with the father of her children William H Thompson. She expects to stay at least two years due to travel difficulties and to allow the babies to be older before leaving England.
The United States plans to launch 1000 plane Superfortress raids against Nippon under a new air war organization. Gen Barney Giles announces the aim to bring all Japan and Manchuria within range, with Gen Spaatz taking command of strategic air forces including B-29s and long-range escorts. Advancing British forces report pushing Japanese troops from the Sittang river bend area in Burma after a week of heavy fighting. British 2404 Army units attacked Myitkwe, 29 miles northeast of Peeao, using concentrated artillery as the Japanese withdrawal left streets clear for pursuit and regrouping. Liberator bombers hit Malay peninsula targets including Sawnekis port near Singapore.
POTSDAM July 16 The big three opened what may be their next conference amid hopeful anticipation of durable results for the future. The question remains whether Truman Churchill and Stalin will agree on postwar issues as did Roosevelt. Analysts weigh the prospects for peace and postwar policies at this pivotal meeting.
Chinese columns recaptured an American airfield near Kanhsien as they drive toward Kwerlin. Japanese forces retreated northwest from Kanhsien, engaging Chinese near Sukhwat while small incursions occurred along the Amoy coast and in Pukien. Limkong in Linchow district fell on June 30 as Kwanting troops push toward Yunetu, 43 miles from the provincial capital.
