Community wary of reno plans for former George Washington Jr High
Lawrence County planning director Craig urged the New Castle Area School District to reconsider the renovation of the former George Washington Junior High School in North Hill New Castle. He warned the addition should match the building’s historic style and preserve surrounding park spaces used by residents. A separate update covered Julie Turner’s historic buildings survey funded by a 10,150 grant, with a July 27 public meeting planned at the New Castle Library. The commission also approved Frank Wigton’s three lot mobile home park off Pa 488 in Perry Township after plan revisions.

Poindexter says Reagan signed arms sales finding
Former national security adviser Poindexter testified that Reagan signed a December 1985 finding describing early Iran arms sales as an arms for hostages deal. He said he later destroyed the authorization document to avoid political embarrassment, a claim contrasting with the Tower Commission.

Reagan says he cannot recall authorizing Iran arms deal finding
President Reagan, watching Iran Contra hearings with John Poindexter, says he does not remember signing a December 1985 finding that authorized an arms for hostages deal with Iran. Spokesman Marlin Fitzwater notes the president believes the move was a strategic opening to Iran, not an arms transfer authorization. Poindexter testified the finding covered arms transfers already made and the memo was later destroyed to avoid embarrassment.
