Specter outlines deficit and foreign policy during New Castle stop

U S Sen Arlen Specter spent about 40 minutes at the New Castle Public Library fielding questions on the deficit trade Iran Contra NATO arms talks and Reagan era nominees. He stressed verifiability in any arms deal and urged reciprocity to curb subsidized imports while warning against Iran’s sea lanes. Specter praised North but urged truth and integrity in government and promised open-minded scrutiny of Robert Bork’s Supreme Court nomination.

Mohawk Rehires Retort as School Superintendent

Edmund Retort was reappointed Mohawk Area School District superintendent for five years from July 1988 to June 1993. The unanimous vote, with two absences, keeps his salary at 48000. Retort, a 27 year district veteran, thanked the board and pledged to improve education. He announced 18999 from ECIA for library and computer supplies and 1889 from Education for Economic Security Act pooled with other districts for math and science in-service.

Directors Guild averts strike in tentative contract

Los Angeles reports the Directors Guild of America reached a three year tentative contract with producers, averting a strike that could halt film and television work. Picketers gathered outside Burbank and New York studios as details awaited a news conference.

Missing Neshannock man after car found in Pittsburgh

Douglas Case, 28, of Neshannock Township, with heart and lung disease, disappeared after borrowing his mother's car in July. The vehicle was found in Lawrenceville, Pittsburgh, with tires removed. Case, a 1977 Neshannock High School graduate, had only one day’s medication supply and was last heard saying he would go to Pittsburgh. His mother reports he may need a heart and lung transplant in the future and remains missing.
