City woman charged with child neglect

A city woman Leona Lee of 319 Green St was charged by county child welfare director Edna Gibson before Alderman Howard Hanna after a state caseworker found a 15 month old boy alone in their home. Lee pleaded innocent and is held on a $500 cash bond awaiting a Friday hearing. The child John Fitzpatrick Lee remained in Jameson Memorial Hospital in good condition.

Mobile home rules debated at Shenango zoning hearing

About 75 residents attended a Shenango Township zoning hearing on mobile home regulations. Paul R. Cunningham said proposed rules would require trailer placement to gain approval from the Zoning Board of Adjustment with conditional permits after meeting residential standards. Some residents argued for no board permission claiming equal rights to houses. Currently mobile homes allowed only in trailer parks, but enforcement has lagged.

Contracts Awarded for Shenango Youth Center Project

The General State Authority awarded contracts totaling 5.53 million dollars for construction of the Shenango Township Youth Development Center. Bids opened June 17 in Pittsburgh. Groundbreaking is 2 p.m. tomorrow on Frew Mill Road with Lt. Gov. Shafer as speaker and Mayor Jordan as master of ceremonies. Completion is set for July 6, 1967.

Ambassador Stevenson Dies at 65 in London

Adlai F. Stevenson US ambassador to the United Nations and two time Democratic presidential candidate died in London at age 65. The cause of death was not immediately released. He met British leaders recently and was en route to New York after the Geneva conference. Born February fifth 1900 in Los Angeles he held varied posts including special assistant to the Navy Secretary and head of a postwar Italian recovery mission.

Shenango County land for Park and Recreation under Project 70

Gov William W Scranton approved purchase of 142 acres in Lawrence County for new park and recreation facilities under Project 70. The lands total 9 000 acres across 17 counties and Philadelphia with cost shared by state and municipalities. In New Castle 65 acres on six sites and in Shenango 77 acres on five sites. Sites include 40 acres along Neshannock Creek and areas next to Shenango Park with bathhouse picnic areas boating and ice skating.

Confirmation of Marshall Faces Delay

President Johnson nominated Thurgood Marshall, a 57 year old federal appeals court judge, for the third ranking post in the Justice Department. Senate confirmation hinges on review by the Senate Judicial Committee led by Sen Eastland, with previous Kennedy appointment taking about a year.

Infantry division arrives at Bien Hoa air base in Vietnam

A task force of 2,976 U S Army combat infantrymen landed near Bien Hoa airbase, 15 miles north of Saigon, joining an advance unit as the only Army infantry force in the war. The Red One Division increases U S strength in South Vietnam to 71,000, while other units have seen action.

Taylor votes to demolish vacant house

West Pittsburg Township Supervisors authorize condemnation of a vacant West Pittsburg Rd home owned by Andrew and Mrs Russo of California after a cost inquiry and safety concerns. The house is dilapidated with broken windows and kids playing inside, and the nearby former Wilbur Peak residence has already been demolished.

Groundbreaking for Youth Development Center to honor community effort

The community raises 274000 to buy the site for a 5.5 million Youth Development Center in Shenango Township. The facility will house 250 delinquent boys 14 to 18, create 150 to 200 jobs, and aims for completion by July 1967 with groundbreaking at 2 p.m. tomorrow led by Mayor John C. Jordan.
