Port Huron Mich July 13 The freight steamer Choctaw of the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co was sunk late yesterday off Presque Isle after a collision with the steamer Whatondah The Whatondah picked up all the Choctaws crew 15 men and brought them into Port Huron this morning The Choctaw a 3000 ton vessel left Cleveland Saturday night for the sea with coal she was built in 1892 A heavy fog hung over Lake Huron as the Choctaw entered the lake
After weeks of reconnaissance Old General Summer attacks New Castle today for the first time since 1914. Electric fans cooling ices and other forces of the army of combatants are ready to stand the siege. The mercury soars as the city sizzles while farms rejoice at delayed wheat harvests due to soft soil from rain.
President Wilson will not discuss the German reply with his cabinet until next week. He has not yet ordered his private car to come to Cornish and will likely not leave for Washington until Friday. He will have seven days to consider the issue before the first cabinet meeting Tuesday. The president was up early and spent the forenoon on the golf links.

New York July 13. Sidney Hillman says one large firm capitulated to striking pants workers and others will follow. He expects all 100000 union members to join the strike unless widespread capitulation continues. Lisner & Co. rehired 300 workers at 1913 wage level with about two dollars weekly increase.
Belmont County miners walk out after two months of work following a year long strike. Two thousand miners demand installation of coal scales on the run of mine basis. Where scales are absent workers refuse to report for duty, arguing the time limit for installation has expired.
The New Castle knitting mills plan to install new bleaching department machinery to meet rising demand for white hosiery. The addition will increase output and require pounds of bleaching powder annually.
Charles, a homeless boy, will receive a permanent home. The News appeal brought about 40 applications to the Children's Aid Society plus many telephone inquiries. Mrs. A D Mornes says a suitable home will be found from the applicants. The society is pleased with the response.

In New York on July 13 Harry K Thaw and his attorneys hailed a resumed sanity test hearing before Justice Hendrick and a jury. They predicted Thaw would be declared sane and free within 48 hours as they argued the state's case had collapsed. Dr Austin Flint’s testimony favoring Thaw sparked jubilation among his defenders.
London July 13. Chancellor McKenna announced in the house of commons that the second British loan is a complete success with 570 million pounds subscribed, totaling 2.85 billion dollars. He praised the English public for their loyalty in supporting the war effort.
Health department reports show few disease cases for several weeks. City remains nearly free from contagion and doctors appear to have a slack workload at the present time.
London July 13. Sir Edwin Cornwall will propose in parliament that the name Bothalana be given to the German Southwest Africa as a tribute to the Boer general who led the forces that conquered the colony. It is possible Gen. Botha will also receive a title.
On the first day at the Fresh Air Camp in Eastbrook a group of 49 tired children washed and prepared for bed after the 8:45 retiring bell. Fifty mattresses with fresh white bedding awaited them in the sleeping quarters as visitors viewed the scene and the Eastbrook boys band provided entertainment under H. H. Beck of the Associated Charities.
The 1915 Grand Lodge, B. P. O. Elks opened in Los Angeles with ritual ceremonies. Delegates stayed for Venice Ocean Park and Santa Monica festivities and an evening electric pageant. Atlanta and Baltimore contending to host the 1916 convention. James R. Nicholson of Springfield named grand exalted ruler.
Property owners on Park and Boyles avenues presented a petition to extend the city storm sewer from Highland avenue westward to the sewer crossing Blaine street. Rev. J. E. Drake urged the need and reasons. The council investigated the area and action on the request is expected soon.
In Ossining New York on July 13 James Stephenson a 24 year old man killed his wife Anna with a razor at their home and shot himself when officers arrived to arrest him.
Berlin reports German forces advancing toward Arras at Souchez. They seized the Caba ret Rouge and pushed 600 yards across the Souchez cemetery. Three officers and 215 men were captured, while French attacks in Le Pretre forest failed with heavy losses.
U S officials weigh recognition of a Mexican government after Villa s dash south from Aguas Calientes. Villa and Zapata forces threaten Mexico City as Carranzista troops retreat toward Lampazos. Rail and telegraph lines to the capital reopen aiding famine relief transport and communications.
In Ellwood City Pennsylvania authorities pursue occupants of a mysterious auto accused of holding up and assaulting Mrs Viola Garrity of Mt Washington Beaver Falls near Homewood early Sunday. Nationwide alerts issued but no suspects yet located.
Frederick Stang age 73 of 202 Montgomery Ave died. Mary Schweinsberg age 80 of Butler County is noted. Alfredo Maroccello age 12 of West Washington Street is mentioned in the record.
Paris reports a 35 aircraft raid on the German held railroad station at Vigneulles. Aerial assault dropped 171 shells setting the station and town ablaze. All planes returned safely to base per the official communique.
Gordon Jackson about 10, of Round Street, was thrown from a horse while riding to the watering trough. An older boy struck the horse causing it to shy. He landed on his head and was unconscious before a doctor’s examination. The injury is painful but not believed serious.
Violent earthquakes hit the island of Fuerteventura in the Canaries causing immense damage and loss of life. Hundreds of houses are destroyed and surviving residents have fled to fields after 24 hours of tremors.
