The United States conducts Operation Alert 1957 with 100 plus cities simulated to suffer nuclear strikes. President Eisenhower to be evacuated by helicopter as civil defense agencies test emergency centers and mobilization plans away from Washington.
The city urges alertness as siren blasts are expected to be real, not tests from Monday and Tuesday. Teachers receive three cent commemorative stamps for NAEs 100th anniversary, while unlicensed dogs roam streets and may face $100 fines. Remember safe driving and proper garbage disposal to aid incineration. Rural towns are urged to support volunteer fire departments through local taxes.

The Rev Timothy B Sullivan 65 of St Julius R C Church Erie Pennsylvania died aboard a New Haven Railroad train arriving at Grand Central. Porter L D Surrency found the priest unconscious in his bedroom on the inbound train from White River Junction Vermont. A physician pronounced death as from natural causes at the terminal.
The Clinton high school segregation case in Knoxville centers on FBI raw files as Judge Robert L. Taylor grants defense requests, leaving only a two paragraph deletion. U S attorney John C. Crawford expresses surprise at the surrender of documents to the defendants charged with contempt for obstructing school integration.
Washington reports scientists expect a rocket to moon launch as a potential October test from an Air Force balloon platform. Officials deny a deliberate moon shot but acknowledge the craft could reach outer space and possibly the moon from a Pacific site near the equator. The plan hinges on achieving escape velocity from a high altitude before gravity draws it toward the moon.
President Eisenhower signed an omnibus housing bill authorizing lower FHA down payments and directing 1.99 billion dollars to speed slum clearance and new home building. Gen William S. Girard prepares his defense after a Supreme Court ruling sent him to a Japanese court for a manslaughter case over a Japanese woman’s death at a target range. An American attorney warned the defense will be difficult since much evidence is already public. The Maebashi district court set August 26 for the first hearing. potential sentence 2 to 15 years.
In Buffalo New York a 39 year old woman Mrs Helen Ginter confessed she strangled her first husband 14 years ago and led police to believe he had died by suicide. She testified in city court while seeking to clear a warrant against her present husband for non support.
Governor George M. wader signs a relief appropriation totaling 129.6 million dollars for the State Public Assistance Department for 1957 59. Earlier in 1957 the Legislature set aside 15 million to operate the agency until a final figure was approved. The measure designates 1 million for medical dental and surgical care for children. Leader had sought 150 million for the department. The general appropriation bill continues on page 6 column 9.
A summer heat wave with high humidity blankets most of the nation. Only the Pacific Northwest, Michigan peninsula, and extreme northern New England stay near normal. Temperatures remain uncomfortable with 70s and 80s by night across the plains and Rockies to the Appalachians, while the southern plateau and interior California see 90s after dark.

Lawrence County Court ruled the city must stand as sole defendant in a suit by Neshannock Shenango Hickory and Union Townships seeking $20 000 to $50 000 in wage taxes collected from township residents employed within the city during 1953 and 1954 The judge overruled requests to add the city school district as a defendant and to refund only half the taxes The townships allege a 1953 oral agreement and plan to seek an accounting from New Castle for taxes collected from residents employed within the city.

Washington reports Prime Minister Huseyn Suhrawardy ends a three day state visit with expected U S aid talks. He meets President Eisenhower, addresses the National Press Club, and holds talks with Secretary of State Dulles. He plans a two week U S tour then departs for Europe from New York on July 26.
In McKeesport Pennsylvania two young men died after a motorcycle struck the rear of a legally parked trailer truck on Walnut Street at about 3 45 am Steward Pope twenty of Boston and Eugene Di Bittista nineteen of McKeesport died from head and other injuries Pope died on arrival at McKeesport Hospital Batista died three hours later Police said speed excess caused the crash and the truck driver Roland C Jenkins of Baltimore waited for daybreak and posted a coroner bond as required by law
In Philadelphia AP report Mrs. Alice Roberts of Phoenix and co pilot Iris Critchell of Palos Verdes Estates were named winners of the 11th Powder Puff Derby. The pair averaged about 188 mph across 2,567 miles from San Mateo California to North Philadelphia Airport.
London reports quote diplomatic circles about a rift between Marshal Georgi Zhukov and deputy marshal Alexander Vassilievski. Vassilievski, seen as Zhukov’s rival and pro tougher West policy, may soon exit, while Khrushchev and Zhukov gain solid marshal backing.
Senator Karl Mundt urges a federal grand jury investigate wartime spy rings in Washington. He cites new information showing networks operated more effectively and widely, linking the Soviet spy ring led by Jack Soble to rings revealed by Elizabeth Bentley. He says loose ends should be tied for a fuller wartime history.
