Australian tanks and infantry pushed a three mile wedge into Japanese lines in the Balikpapan area as Allied forces report gains in eastern Borneo. MacArthur confirms air and naval bombardments supporting the advance toward Mount Bato champur and the Sienecar field region.
PA NEWC reports improved paving on Northview avenue from Mercer street to Wilmington road in Neshannock township. Other items note corn growth on Bartholomew and Piedmont farms, small victory garden stands, a local girl’s humorous letters to a serviceman, and modest contributions to a state con science fund.

An American platoon repelled a night infiltration by remnants of the Okinawa garrison near Nakagusuku castle. Twenty four enemy troops were killed. Americans reported six wounded with no fatalities. A nine man patrol led by Lynn Bullen spotted the threat and called in reinforcements under Lt. Tony Bogaards.
Rear Adm. John D. Price, commander of Fleet Airwing One, received the Navy Cross from Fleet Adm. Nimitz for the air blockade over Japanese sealanes. His wing’s search planes sank or damaged nearly 300000 tons of enemy shipping in 2.5 months. Price is named commander of the naval operation base at Okinawa, succeeded by Rear Adm. John Perry.
Pittsburgh police report Joseph Caldwell forced entry at a Mt. Washington home and shot his estranged wife Mabel Caldwell before killing himself. The 39 year old woman was hospitalized with a heart area wound after Caldwell warned the landlady he had a gun and entered the third floor apartment.
Japanese Domei agency reported 180 American fighters and bombers attacked airfields on southern Kyushu from Okinawa bases. Weather prevented damage as planes retreated without making any mischief.
An American Sixth Division Doughboys seized Ki Angat, the last-known Japanese stronghold in northern Luzon, after a heavy air and artillery assault. The defenses included pillboxes caves and other fortifications. In the Cagayan valley further Japanese troops surrendered.
An accident near Columbiana killed three women when their car was struck by a Pennsylvania railroad train at a crossing. The victims were Mrs Pearl Grist 67 niece Miss Hazel Hamilton 43 enroute to board a train and Mrs Mary L Holden guest in the Grist home. Police investigated the fatal crash.
Finnish radio quoted Stockholm reports of a Tokyo riot with about 400 killed or injured. The disturbance began when roughly 10 000 people tried to seize government buildings and approach the Imperial Palace. other sources did not corroborate the claims.
Washington July 12 Senate debate looms as LO senators join in opposing part of the Bretton Woods monetary agreement. Leaders like Sen. Pat McCarran say amendments may be offered to protect U S monetary sovereignty and the gold and silver standard. The Western and Southwestern bloc argues the plan risks the dollar’s soundness and U S control over money.
Senator Taft denounces the Bretton Woods monetary fund and bank proposal calling it a camouflaged method to send billions abroad He urges delaying action until after the summer recess and advocates direct American loans to aid foreign economies Taft warns the plan may drain U S savings and be unpaid. The debate intersects with push to speed action on the United Nations charter with chart er witnesses lined up before the Senate committee.
Fry and Co of Seattle asked the OPA and Secretary of Agriculture for a point holiday on cheese as warehouses are glutted. The firm reports over 200000 pounds stored and 25000 pounds of foreign make arriving weekly, with storage almost exhausted according to Ro M Robbins, produce manager. The request was wired to Price Administrator Chester Bowles and Secretary Clinton P. Anderson.

A Madrid dispatch to the London Evening Standard rumors that President Harry S Truman would join Prime Minister Churchill at Hendaye. Report said many high American officials and numerous American cars were at Biarritz near Hendaye.
