Berlin authorities claim the Nazi blitz is tightening and that Soviet defenses are deteriorating. German reports say victories at Bialystok Minsk and along the Baltic coast have drained Red troops and equipment, with decimated air forces and disrupted Soviet communications.
Senator Taft says he has been reliably informed the United States is building naval and air bases in Scotland for Great Britain. He cited prior Senate remarks on bases in Northern Ireland. Navy Secretary Knox acknowledged a base in Northern Ireland under the lease lead act, while denying an actual shooting war by U S ships with Germany.
Hostilities in Syria and Lebanon ended at midnight as negotiations for an armistice resumed under General Dentz. Cairo reports say Allied forces were ordered to cease fire, described as temporary while talks with the British continue, despite France rejecting earlier terms.

The body of Louis Fulte, 38, of Marissa Illinois, was found after his automobile burned on a country lane ten miles southeast of Sullivan Indiana. Loren Hollingsworth reported hearing a scream before flames engulfed the car as Sheriff Sevier investigated the grisly scene.
Harrisburg July 12. Pennsylvania lawmakers pressed toward adjournment with a congressional reapportionment plan as the main hurdle. If deadlock continues all 39 seats could be elected at large next year, delaying final adjournment beyond today. Leaders seek a compromise while tension rises across the state.
A Reuters dispatch from Gibraltar reports an unidentified plane bombed La Linea at 3 a.m. Local casualties include six killed and about twenty injured. The Italian craft reportedly mistook La Linea for Gibraltar, a short distance from the British fortress at the Mediterranean entrance.
Col Robert G Woodside and a visitor group inspected Pennsylvania Defense Reserve Corps Company B Third Regiment at the Joseph W Cunningham Armory. In civilian clothes the unit drilled with professional precision despite lacking uniforms and equipment. Woodside praised progress and said the organization supports civil authorities in times of trouble.
The Senate naval affairs committee urged President Roosevelt to insist on early withdrawal of British troops from Iceland. Senator Lucas said the panel viewed the presence as against US interests and recommended immediate removal, noting Churchill had claimed some troops would stay.
July 12 An Allegheny valley thunderstorm dropped 1.90 inches of rain in Vandergrift causing the Kiskiminetas river to rise two feet. The storm moved toward Butler county and receded. Occasional light showers expected today with clearing cooler tonight. Tomorrow forecast for the region is fair with moderate temperatures per the weather bureau.

British bombers pressed raids on the German occupied French coast and targeted northwestern Germany during the night. RAF formations from Boulogne area returned with heavy anti aircraft fire heard along the southeast English coast. Nazi raiders attacked a convoy in the North Sea and bombed the northeast coast of Scotland.
T H Patton son of Mrs W H Patton of the Harlansburg road and a 11 year assistant county farm agent has been appointed county agent of Lackawanna county with headquarters in Scranton by the Penn State board of trustees. He studied at Penn State after New Castle High School and earned a BS in agriculture then served in Delaware and Erie counties. United States consular officials in Germany are ordered to assemble families in Frankfort on Main for departure to America within days as Washington acts against German consulars.
July 24 marked collection day for aluminum in Lawrence County as the county's general committee led by Chairman Paul Dingledy urged housewives to gather spare aluminum utensils. Four collection points are set at New Castle Ellwood City New Wilmington and Bessemer with neighboring districts asked to bring in items by the bio day.
