French forces report capturing Longpont and Savage farm with extensions near Chavigny and Favrelles as rain and wind hindered fighting on the Marne front. Italians noted for Berat capture in southern Albania and advances in Semeni and Devoli valleys toward Valona and Serbia, while British airplanes bomb Constan tinue.
London reports Berat in southern Albania has fallen to Italian forces cutting off the Austro Hungarian drive toward Valona. Italian lines advance about 19 miles southward with numerous Austro Hungarian prisoners taken around Berat. Paris notes activity along a 175 mile Balkan front with Kosnitz and Debriny occupied and intensified artillery duels. British airmen bombed depots in the Struma Valley.
Councilman W C Shanafelt said another vacancy will open in the city fire department. Carl Hanna of the paid unit has been chosen for army service and departs on July 26.
At a Lawrence club meeting the Board of Trade accepted Commissioner William Kennedy's resignation due to a better offer in Eldorado Kansas. Kennedy departs at month start. New officers were elected: President George L. Patterson first vice president J Norman Martin second vice president George Rigby. Peter Capitola and R M White named to fill board vacancies replacing W B Veach.
Four hundred workers at the Smith and Wesson revolver plant in Springfield go on strike for higher pay and shorter hours. The action follows the discharge of several employees who were union members yesterday.
French troops have occupied the village of Longport between the Aisne and Oureq rivers and captured Savage farm. The war office says the counter offense north of Chavigny farm and east of Favorelles made progress with prisoners taken in Champagne raids. The Meuse battlefront also saw enemy artillery activity.
Mrs. Margaret Lelbach a 47 year old German woman committed suicide by hanging in Philadelphia on July 12 fearing internment. The fear proved groundless as she was already registered as an alien enemy and had been recalled only to provide updated fingerprints.
Two ordinances were introduced in morning session to grade Warren street on the Eastside and repave North Jefferson street hill from Grant street to the hilltop, twenty feet wide in the center. Both measures were sent to the committee of the whole.
Julius Pir nitzer president of the trans-Atlantic Trust Co. and three other officers were arrested as dangerous enemy aliens and held pending internment notice. The bank was taken over by the Alien Property Custodian and reorganized, with arrests unrelated to the government seizure.
Greensburg Pennsylvania July 12 Judge Lucien W Doty who served nearly 29 years as president judge of Westmoreland County Courts died today at age 70.
Federal agents in Chicago detain and examine more than 5 000 draftees citywide to confirm registration. Each man must show a draft card or face questions at the federal building. over 100 000 have been questioned as the drive continues beyond the initial day with many released and 430 held for further inquiry.
Master James Williams of 27 Bay Street, aged thirteen, sent a sausage shaped toy balloon last Saturday tying his name and address to it. He received a letter from J. Lloyd Cochran of near Ex port Pa stating the balloon was found two days after launch and had traveled about 75 miles before landing.
New Castle held a luncheon honoring David Jameson, head of the National Automobile Association, with Jameson declaring no good American will live under the Kaiser. He urged unity to secure better roads in Lawrence County, aiming for 2500 members, and said the meeting honored a man who stood for these goals.
Mr Jameson recited a note of automotive history citing a 12 year old motor car once a curiosity. He brought the third machine to New Castle and secured a $3 license at the courthouse. It had two cylinders and entrance via the rear door due to stiffness fears about a side door.
More than 100 county citizens gathered at the First Christian church for a luncheon honoring Jameson on his election to the presidency of the American Automobile Association. Judge S Plummer Emery chaired as speakers praised his achievement and outlined the gathering’s purpose beyond mere celebration.

Mead Ewing was arrested last night before Alderman Mantz by Detective Harry Glitch on suspicion of carrying concealed weapons. Two revolvers were found in his possession near the Junction. He was committed to jail to await a hearing.
Property owners on Boyles avenue between Rural avenue bridge and Neshannock avenue presented a petition to council asking for an ordinance to grade and pave the street. Action was postponed until the next council meeting.
