Syracuse youth charged in first degree strangling murder
Louis Dwight Brookins 20 of Syracuse, a dishonorably discharged former Marine, was charged with the first degree murder of Ruth Caputo, 32, a Pittsburgh native and Rochester manicurist. First fatality of the swimming season occurred Tuesday afternoon when 10 year old Anthony Panella of 208 South Ceasar street drowned in the Beaver River. His body was recovered at 6:40 p.m. by an Ellwood City Rescue squad member after attempts to save him. County Coroner T. F. Nugent was summoned. State Police said Panella was among youths picking beans near the river when he swam across and encountered a strong current. He called for help as two local youths tried to assist but all were himself exhausted.
