A gasoline tanker rack was struck by a train in Tazewell County Virginia causing a fiery crash. Driver Douglas L. Schaeffer 28 was killed along with passerby Steven McGinnis 68. NEW YORK UPI Jimmy Carter faces a major battle from Democratic women demanding half the delegates at the 1980 national convention. The National Organization of Women will lead a nine block march to Madison Square Garden for equal representation, while a women’s caucus plan seeks on floor action if no compromise is reached. Women hold 34.4 percent of delegates this year, down from 38 percent four years ago. AFL-CIO leader George Meany will not attend in person, watching on television from Washington.

Neshannock seeks PennDOT talks on Pa. 18 access changes
Neshannock Township supervisors will partner with PennDOT on a summer resurfacing project along Pa. 1B to narrow business entrances and exits. A June meeting reviewed recommendations to ease congestion, including overlaying blacktop, rebuilding berms and ditches, and coordinating traffic lights to a 24 hour cycle after sequence work. The board will file letters to PennDOT’s local and Franklin offices and plan a July 24 follow up with Michael Baker Jr. Inc. to discuss rights of way for a new sewer system funded by a $4.3 million EPA grant and $2.85 million in federal Appalachia funds.

Beaver County Sheriff Sentenced for Obstructing Law Enforcement
John Hineman, former Beaver County sheriff, received a five year federal sentence for obstructing state law enforcement. Judge Gerald J. Weber suspended the balance after zero days served, placing Hineman on probation for the full term. He was found guilty May 17 of protecting gambling operations linked to Anthony Acon, associate of late mob boss Jasper Aiello.

Robbery suspect slain in Knox County gunbattle
An off duty sheriff’s deputy shot and killed Richard Tucker Jr., 24, of East Liverpool, Ohio after a gunfight while Tucker faces robbery charges in a Wellsville bank branch heist.
