Police issued a nationwide alarm asking druggists to watch customers seeking a vitamin needed for the Weinberger baby kidnapped from his Long Island home last July 4. Investigators, facing a dead end, expect FBI entry soon as they seek new clues.
The downtown area faced light chaos from a July wind as skirts hats and items blew about while moving vans stayed busy with relocations. Watermelon and other produce created waste for the incinerator and residents are urged to wrap refuse in paper. Pets need ample water during the heat and Japanese beetles threaten flowers and shrubs in gardens. Large forest leaves appeared after heavy rain with two hickory leaves reaching fourteen and twelve inches long.

John P. Milanovich, six years head basketball coach at New Castle High School, will become assistant principal at Hopewell Two, a joint junior senior high school near Aliquippa. The new post stems from enrollment growth, with about a growing student body. New Castle board expected to accept his resignation at Wednesday meeting and may name a new basketball coach.
At 3 p.m. Wednesday the FBI can officially enter the kidnapping case of the Weinberger baby after a seven day waiting period. Federal law requires the period unless interstate flight or violation is shown. A spokesman did not reveal immediate plans while G men cooperate with New York authorities.
French planes and ground forces hunted a heavily armed rebel band after seven soldiers were killed and 11 wounded in an ambush 45 miles southeast of Algiers. Light aircraft and helicopters circled the Palestro hills as patrols fanned out, recalling a previous massacre of French reservists there two months earlier.
In Flagstaff Arizona a mass burial laid 67 of 70 aboard the TWA Super Constellation, 58 from the United Airlines plane, in a Grand Canyon Memorial Plot at Flagstaff Cemetery. Services were led by Protestant Catholic Jewish clergy with a Mormon present as over 1,000 mourners attended. The three remaining victims were to be buried in their hometowns.
Israel registered a strong protest to United Nations truce observers against raids on the frontier with Jordan. Israeli authorities reported two Israelis killed in an ambush near Ein Hatseva and no casualties from a separate Ramat Rachel shooting south of Jerusalem.
Federal officials moved on two fronts to end a 10 day steel shutdown hurting 40 000 coal miners and 65 000 to 90 000 in transport and other steel dependent industries. Mediation director Finnegan pressed for new bargaining talks as USW President McDonald attended AFL CIO meetings in Washington.
Beatrice Ellen Carothers 56 wife of William R. Carothers of 501 Sampson St died in a storm related accident when she stepped into a puddle charged by a downed 2400 volt wire at 309 Sampson St. about 3 45 p m yesterday. A passerby and a bystander warned her but she fell and died before aid arrived. The Pennsylvania Power Co. turned off the line and she was taken to New Castle hospital where she was pronounced dead. She was born October 27 1899 in Salem Ohio and was a member of St Josephs Church. Surviving are her husband two sons four brothers and other relatives.
Louis C. Statler, 69, of Altoona Pennsylvania, was found guilty of first degree murder in the strangling of 18 year old Gloria Ann Ferry of Altoona. A three judge panel in Cleveland deliberated about two and a half hours before issuing the verdict. An unanimous mercy recommendation spared the electric chair and made life imprisonment mandatory.
Nassau police probe the July 4 abduction of 38 day old Peter Weinberger. Inspector Pinnell says a frustrated mother helped by a teen may have used a $2,000 ransom as cover. The Weinbergers have had no contact from the kidnapper and the case may be nontraditional in nature.
A Trans-Canada Viscount en route from Chicago to Toronto shed a propeller at 19 000 feet over Flat Rock Michigan smashing into the fuselage. One woman, Mrs Robert Lippert, died and five others injured during the emergency Windsor landing. The crew blamed a runaway propeller.
Dr Will W Orr president of Westminster College opened the Pennsylvania Christian Endeavor gathering on the college campus last night. About 450 youths attended the Monday service during the week long convention. Orr urged delegates to glorify God, show His power, and pray without ceasing.
Gov. Frank G. Clement of Tennessee was chosen to deliver the keynote at the Democratic National Convention on August 13. National Chairman Paul M. Butler announced the pick from about 18 prominent Democrats after a three hour meeting in Chicago. Clement, 36, a staunch Adlai Stevenson backer, was described as very happy by Nashville aides awaiting official notification.
President Eisenhower told Republican congressional leaders he remains a candidate for a second term and will wage a vigorous campaign to retain the White House and regain control of Congress. Senate Leader Knowland relayed the news that the president is in good shape after his recent intestinal operation. The 9:30 a.m. meeting showed the president energetic and tanned, with weight loss still visible but little illness.
First Federal Plaza construction may delay release of the contract as several First Federal officials are out of town. The second bid set is to be opened today with plans adjusted to permit lower bids from the four lowest bids submitted June 26, though no major building changes are expected.
Gen Nathan F Twining will brief the Senate Armed Services Committee behind closed doors on the Soviet air threat. He may update his Moscow trip impressions as to whether Soviet strength has widened the lead in aircraft numbers and quality. The hearing faces GOP leaders absence for Gettysburg talks with President Eisenhower.
