President Truman said he may call a special session of Congress this fall if Marshall Plan legislation is needed to implement European aid. He will decide after observing the Paris conference and will meet Democratic and Republican leaders to discuss actions on displaced persons.
Chicago July 10 ins masked gunmen postpone Harry Margaris trip to his native Athens after robbing him at a friend’s home. Margaris, who sold a restaurant, carried 4310 dollars and was about to depart from Chicago municipal airport. Detectives noted the attackers showed knowledge of his plans by not robbing his companions Logisios and James Eleades.
The city repaired several downtown alleys including holes in the asphalt to improve driving and walking conditions. The All-American Soap Box Derby returns to Ellwood City on Wednesday July 30 with many entries and a 3:30 p.m. race on Line avenue Derby Hill.
United States weather statistics show a maximum temperature of 72 and a minimum of 55 with 10 inches of precipitation today. River stage stands at 5.2 feet. A year ago the high was 86 and the low 47 with traces of precipitation.
New York July 10 Police questioned over 150 cafe society friends of murdered blonde actress Sheila Mannering as the hunt for the kiss and kill strangler widened. The former silent screen player known as Bessie True listed many middle aged men in six address books. Police already questioned more than 70 of them. Her nude body was found between twin beds with a bed sheet strangling her and a bath towel thrust down her throat. Police Commissioner Arthur W. Wallander led the investigation personally seeking the killer who had spent time with the actress.
Pittsburgh police charged three men with holdups of three Pittsburgh hotels and other businesses. Ronald Tucker Alfred Pittman Jr 23 from Brooklyn W Va Lee Ramsey 20 of Jefferson City Tenn and Alexander Savage 30 of Pittsburgh were named. Tucker said he and Savage robbed the hotels within six days and hit two Western Union offices and a currency exchange. Tucker drew a pistol but was disarmed by Detective Edward A Schuster.
Sharon Chamber of Commerce to join communities served by Pennsylvania Railroad in protesting the plan to abandon passenger service between Sharon and Erie. A PUC hearing on the abandonment is set for tomorrow in Erie.
The House approved a presidential succession bill placing Speaker Joe Martin of Massachusetts next in line to become chief executive if President Truman cannot finish his term. The measure, already cleared by the Senate, would follow the speaker with the Senate president pro tempore and then cabinet officers starting with the secretary of state.
Washington insiders expect John L. Lewis to attempt a new wage contract for 72,000 anthracite miners under the W day reopening clause of the hard coal agreement in Pennsylvania. Timing aims to beat August 22 Taft Hartley restrictions and extend a one year union shop clause requiring workers to join the UMW within 30 days of hire.
June 1947 posted by Pennsylvania state police shows no highway fatalities in Lawrence County. Ten injury crashes injured 18 people and total property damage reached 8,455 dollars. Main causes cited were failure to drive on the right, excessive speed for conditions, and reckless driving.

The Budapest government said no in an official notice as the Soviet bloc accused the West of plans to divide Europe. Poland Yugoslavia and Romania also refused invitations while Norway Sweden and Denmark indicated willingness to attend.
New York governor leads strategy talks with party leaders from Kansas and Missouri as the Dewey drive for 1948 Republican delegates expands. A Kansas arrival drew about 1,000 cheering supporters at the station.
Queen Mother Mary blessed the forthcoming marriage of Princess Elizabeth to Lt Philip Mountbatten. The couple visited Marlborough House in London after Elizabeth's public engagement appearance. King George VI and Queen Elizabeth accompanied Elizabeth to the residence where the couple then drove away with Mary’s blessing.
Italian Ambassador Alberto Tarchiani described the Marshall plan as a bridge between East and West and a path to better European cooperation. He said Italy supports the plan as a means to overcome Europe's economic crisis and rejected claims it aims to create blocs.

In Athens on July 10 the government said 4000 Communists have been arrested as part of a dragnet against a leftist plot to seize power. Rep. Hartley of New Jersey signaled a possible Justice Department inquiry into John L. Lewis and the coal industry wage contract. He alleged violations of the Taft Hartley act and collusion to break the law and said he would urge action if the department does not act on its own.
The Senate Commerce committee unanimously recommended confirming Rep. Robert F. Jones of Ohio to the Federal Communications Commission. The 13 to 0 vote brushed aside Pearson columns alleging Jones once belonged to the Black Legion, an anti Negro anti Semitic anti Catholic group.
Mrs. Ann R. Hamaker aged 92 of West Meyer Avenue R D 3 is reported dead. Funeral arrangements and further notices follow in the local obituary column of the newspaper.
President Truman vetoes the new four billion dollar tax relief bill as Senate debates the GOP plan. Senate leaders seek three more votes to override. Barkley forecasts Democratic support while Johnston and Byrd express mixed or evolving stances.
President Truman stated at a news conference that he will veto the Republican sponsored tax reduction bill again if sent to him in the same form as the one he vetoed on June 16. He repeated his stance that the attitude toward the measure should not change and confirmed a second veto by Senator Barkley.
