Iranian gunboat attack on Peconic sparks fires in Persian Gulf
The American-owned supertanker Peconic was attacked by an Iranian gunboat in the Persian Gulf at 9 50 am. A fire broke out but no injuries were reported. The ship, Liberian-flagged and operated by Universe Tankships for Gray Shipping, was about 60 miles southeast of Kuwait’s Al Ahmadi oil terminal en route to pick up crude. Officials noted the incident would not alter U S plans to shield Kuwaiti tankers. Salvage tugs were towing the vessel into port with the fire controlled after about 30 minutes. Captain Monogios Michael said the crew had no warning of the attack.

Saundra Patton a 21 year old Edinburg resident has been chosen Miss West Virginia 1987 and will compete with 51 state contestants for the Miss America title during the week of September 13 to 19.
