Beaver Township and New Beaver Borough school boards ratified articles of agreement for the Lawrence County Vocational Technical High School. Laurel Area directors also approved. Fifteen other districts have until July 11 to ratify. North Beaver and New Heaver belong to the Mohawk Area five district jointure.
Senator Edward M Kennedy, confined in a metal frame after a broken back, was being transferred to New England Baptist Hospital in Boston. Doctors from Lahey Clinic were chosen for possible stabilization surgery, with a neurosurgeon involved due to spinal cord proximity. Family reasons and proximity to his Beacon Hill home were noted.
Two senators Thurmond and Yarborough fought briefly outside a committee hearing, jackets off and people watching. Thurmond wrestled Yarborough to the floor then released him, later rejoining the session with apparent cordiality. Both men 61, Yarborough 190 pounds, Thurmond lighter and in trim.
Lawrence County Civil Defense official Slerguis Lucas praised the CD Radio Corps for work during explosions at American Cyana mid Co. County radio officers and amateurs aided the disaster response. U S Army Captain Svenson was sentenced to seven years after a court martial for defecting and rambling a jeep through Communist barricades on the East West border. The defense plans an appeal as testimony showed beatings and threats kept him in Soviet area and he defected “of my own free will.” Mareen Drechsler, Svenson’s girlfriend, attended the proceedings.
