Deputy keeper Thomas Earl, 56, was killed at a Cleveland zoo when the 900 pound Russian brown bear Sun Shine mauled him during a feeding in the cage. The bear, named for its reputed gentleness, refused to be shot before Earl died. Earl had reportedly been discharged minutes earlier.
Washington July 9 International News Service. Bonus army ranks thin as the government offers loans to veterans for transportation home and subsistence. More than 200 marchers headed home today while nearly a thousand have signed loan applications for use today or tomorrow. The veterans bureau will stay open to midnight to issue tickets and subsistence of 75 cents a day. A line formed at the pay window and a system to check departures was set up. Those with trucks may receive subsistence for transport.
British Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald signed the Lausanne reparations ending treaty and urged the United States and European debtors to cut war debts. He warned against economic barriers and called for a solid foundation for security and prosperity. The speech urged a global response beyond Europe.

The annual summer encampment at Camp O Neill Gretna Pennsylvania opened with a artillery salute and over 4000 soldiers arriving. Major General William G. Price Jr. assumed command from Lieut. Col. William Fish as units from across the state arrived by troop trains. The field includes 103rd Cavalry and 103rd Medical Regiments, the 28th Division trains, and the 56th Infantry Brigade with the 111th and 112th regiments.
George Daniels of Republic Fayette County visited New Castle yesterday to extend congratulations to Fred L. Rentz former associate and president of The News company who will celebrate 50 years of service on The News on July 30.

Investigators seek recovery. stolen guns include two 38 caliber numbers 139083 and 3781 and one 45 caliber number 105308, with field glasses number 282625.
The drive to modify the Volstead Act to legalize 2.75 percent beer was sidetracked in the Senate by a fight over placing a billion dollars in circulation. Senator Bingham withdrew his beer bill to avoid a dry trap and vowed to reoffer it after the currency issue is settled. Hazel Swanger a Coburn Pennsylvania girl 15 was bitten on both legs by a rattlesnake while walking near her home. She was taken to Mercy hospital Altoona in critical condition after walking two miles for help. Doctors described her condition as serious due to venom.
