An unidentified Allied merchant ship was shelled for five hours by Japanese submarines off the Australian coast. The attack involved two or more subs and set the vessel on fire, but the ship reached port under its own power. The report comes from Melbourne dated July 7.

Sharon Pennsylvania July 7 Charles G Shaffer a Sharon police veteran of 17 years died from complications after a fall from a cherry tree at his home. He was hospitalized last week and pneumonia developed over the weekend.
Sen. Reynolds of North Carolina, head of the senate military affairs committee, said 10,000,000 men are needed to win the war and that youths aged 18 and 19 will be called for training by year end. He added that opening a second front in Europe or Asia with American forces is useless.
Police blame an unstable love affair as Francis J. Weber 32 of Erie forced entry into a hotel room and shot Lorene June McNeal 29 before dying from a chest wound after firing 13 bullets. Coroner and police continue investigation.
