Police Report Minor Crashes Over Holiday

State police reported several minor accidents during the Fourth of July weekend in Lawrence County. The heaviest traffic was on Route 19 as motorists returned from the lake region. Nancy Sharp sustained a forehead laceration and knee abrasions when a tractor trailer struck her car at Routes 18 and 108. Marcus R. Bush, driver of the truck, was charged with failure to yield. Total damage approx 1500 dollars. Four others suffered minor injuries and two men were arrested in separate city crashes.

Radar Use Cuts Fast Driving

State police in Harrisburg report an experimental radar program over the holiday reduced speeding on a 100 mile stretch of U S Route 30 from Gettysburg to Philadelphia with 245 warnings issued. The test was educational. radar cannot be used as evidence in court. Gov Lawrence ordered the program as part of highway safety efforts and plans include equipping 15 state police troops with radar sets before summer ends. A rain delay postponed the test by one day.

Judge W Walter Braham retires as president of the Chautauqua Institution after its 87th opening. He will be succeeded by J William Carothers, Baltimore executive, who led personnel at Baltimore Gas and Electric. Braham, Lawrence County judge since 1938, returns to New Castle law practice. notes the job cannot be part time as institution grows. Braham helped develop summer programs at the New York institution and remained active in western Pennsylvania politics and legal circles.

Mohawk Area Schools Get Fire Hazard Grants

Mohawk Area School District will receive a total of 74545.41 from state funds to cover fire hazard regulation costs. Grants go to Mohawk Senior High at Bessemer 26598.15 Mohawk Junior High at Mt Jackson 27900.81 and Mahoning Elementary at Sillsville 20046.45. The funds are part of a statewide 1,168,405.59 disbursement for 128 schools.
