A 48 hour delay was threatened in union ratification of the new coal wage pact aimed at preventing a mine strike next Tuesday. Attorneys for John L. Lewis and Northern Appalachian coal operators may not finish drafting the formal contract before Monday.
The holiday weekend death toll rose through the nation with at least 227 fatalities reported by the National Safety Council. Traffic wrecks caused 94 deaths, 71 drownings were listed, and 59 died from other causes. A Tallahassee crash, Merritts Lake capsizing, and Milwaukee homicide followed.
John Wilson of Hamilton street says he canned 14 quarts of peas and ate cabbage and lettuce from his garden. A 2 year old wandered away on North Hill before being found by police. Idaho and other Western plates implied a Fourth of July invasion vibe as crowds packed Cascade Park with cars parked for blocks. An east side traffic reversal occurred at dusk. Continued on Page T.

Seattle witnesses report mysterious flying discs over Portland and Vancouver as Coast Guard publicist Frank Ryman photographs a twilight light spot near Lake City. Ryman estimates the object’s altitude at 9,000 to 10,000 feet and notes a rapid, 500 mile per hour approach, with the image processed by the Seattle Post Intelligencer.
Cascade Park greeted its largest crowd in years as 25 000 people enjoyed a busy daytime to night celebration. The Sons of Italy parade added thousands. eight hundred swam in cool weather while the dance floor and concessions drew steady business. A 10 30 p m fireworks display was praised as the nicest yet and traffic challenges occurred without any accidents.
London and Paris express hope Soviet Russia will cooperate with the 22 nation economic recovery conference to open in Paris July 12. Britain hands Zarubin the invitation and a note urging Russia to reconsider its initial refusal. Eight nations unnamed line up support ahead of formal acceptances.
Film actress Joan Blondell and producer Michael Todd married in a private July Fourth ceremony at the El Rancho Vegas hotel Las Vegas. Attendants included Blondell’s two children and Todd’s son. Rev. R V Carpenter presided. San Ford D Adler served as best man.
The navy cargo vessel Orion located the wreckage of a missing army C-54 in the Atlantic with six crewmen aboard, but no survivors were found. Army aircraft began patrols 300 miles northeast of Palm Beach from Morrison Field as Orion continued the search. The C-54 departed Bermuda at 10 40 a m Thursday and was due at Bermuda’s Kindley Field at 4 20 p m.
Mrs Melinda Wheeler Davis a 51 year old colored resident of 6319 Joseph street Pittsburgh died after a two vehicle crash two miles south of Leesburg on Route 19. She died at Mercer Cottage hospital after sustaining a skull fracture internal injuries and shock. In the crash elsewhere Harrison Williams 32 and Elmer Mitchell 36 both colored suffered injuries including a broken shoulder and internal injuries with lacerations. Glen Osborn 324 West Ninth street Erie was treated for a broken left arm and facial cuts. Williams and Mitchell are listed as residents of 6319 Joseph street Pittsburgh and were in Mercer Cottage hospital. State police say Osborn was traveling from Erie en route to an unknown destination.
The American Russian commission seeking a Korean government remains deadlocked over whether to consult with Korean political and social groups. After a supposed settlement weeks ago, Soviets oppose consultations with certain political parties during two Pyongyang sessions this week.
In Elkton Maryland on July 5 two children died and four were reported in critical condition after a fireworks accident. Ann Cameron eight and Ruth Anne Holmes cousins were killed when a flower pot sparked a roman candle box explosion. Ann’s father William was lighting the device when the flames spread to six victims.
President Truman delivered the Fourth of July appeal for global peace from Monticello and criticized Soviet Russia and its satellites as major obstacles to a guaranteed UN peace. He planned a quiet rest day at Colle before returning to Washington.
Governor Thomas E. Dewey and his wife and two sons begin a 28 day western tour to meet Republican leaders. Reporters accompany the party as they travel to Sapulpa Kansas City Salt Lake City and other stops ending in Michigan. They plan visits with Dewey relatives in Sapulpa and Owosso.

Huge crowds packed Cascade Park Friday night July 4 for the Sons of Italy fireworks display. Estimates ranged 30 000 to 40 000 as cars flooded Washington Street and nearby avenues. Traffic clogged East Washington well past 11 pm with many unable to reach the park. Continued on Page Two.
Ambassador from Italy H. E. Albert Torchiano arrived in New Castle with Judge Felix Forte to attend the Sons of Italy convention banquet. He spoke of peace and joint efforts between Americans and Italians. Judge Forte praised the convention and New Castle hospitality during luncheon with Mr and Mrs Alfonso Scarazzo.
Firemen were called to the home of Harry Hites at 915 West Washington Street at 12 42 pm on July 14 when children shooting off firecrackers set fire to two awnings in front of the house. Damage was around 500 dollars and the blaze spread to insulating shingles on the outside of the house. At 550 pm on the Fourth there was an auto wreck at Mill and Friendship corners, and firemen were called but no action was required.
Death records listing Elisho 85 Wayne township and infant David Edward Wenda with address 1601 South Jefferson street. Other notices include William M. Davies 58 Youngstown Ohio and Joseph P. Smith 84 R D 1 with no further details.
Judge Eugene V. Alessandroni of Philadelphia was re elected grand venerable of the Pennsylania Sons of Italy during the 19th annual convention in the Cathedral. His acclamation follows a long tradition since 1923 as the organization with 45 000 members re elects its leader. Other officers were re elected including Robert M. Sebastian Grand Assistant Grand venerable Grand Orator Dr Anthony E Abbate Grand Recording Secretary Earnest L Biagi Grand Financial Secretary Frank Acquaviva Grand Treasurer Anthony Zaffiro and Dr Joseph Armao. Only one business session was held.
Two pilots Bayard Brumbley 26 manager of the Laurel airport and Charles F. Hitchens 20 with Hitchens’ passenger Harold Cordey 22 of Laurel are reported dead after a midair collision near Seaford Delaware. Authorities say both pilots were stunting in practice for an American Legion carnival when the planes locked wings and fell to the ground.
Civil aeronautics officials probed a plane crash in East Camden that killed Thomas S. Yarnall, 37, of East Town, Pa., and his two children Susie, 8, and Thomas Jr., 3. Yarnall had rented the plane minutes earlier from Patco Flying Field in Conshohocken, Pa. for a holiday ride.
John L. Lewis and a 250 member policy committee convene in Washington to ratify a coal wage settlement aimed at averting a mine strike next Tuesday. The pact raises basic hourly wages by 45 cents and doubles the five cent per ton welfare fund contribution, covering steel company and commercial mines in Pennsylvania Northern West Virginia Maryland and Ohio. Some Illinois Indiana operators and western Mississippi South regions have not yet accepted the agreement, representing about 25 percent of soft coal output.
The Gwinn Milling Co suffered a second major fire in 20 months at its five story Columbus plant. The blaze burned for over 12 hours, started by an explosion on the first floor, and spread via an elevator shaft. Firefighters faced low water pressure from a pump breakdown. no injuries were reported though a half million dollars in damage was estimated.
