London July 5 Britons go to the polls for Britain s first parliament in a decade. The contest pits Winston Churchill s Conservatives against Labour with about 22 million of 33 million registered voters expected to cast ballots. Outcomes hinge on a narrow majority as observers await results.
A group of 37 battle weary veterans performed a final show at Taggart Stadium for the Seventh War Loan campaign on July 4. They depart for Fort Benning soon to be discharged after long Army service. The arena spectacle featured heavy explosives and simulated combat reflecting a Pacific island battle.
The city noted reduced Fourth of July displays with some blasts still heard and an amphibious landing boat seen in traffic. A large blackbird gathering occurred near North Mercer and Sheridan. Wilmington avenue receives limestone resurfacing as traffic remains steady. New sidewalks expect cleaner streets once Washington street repairs finish.

Washington July 5 INS A Navy communique says the U S S Trigger a 1500 ton submarine completed since the war began is overdue from patrol and presumed lost The crew of 80 to 85 aboard is listed as missing under Commanding Officer Comdr David R Connole and next of kin have been informed The sub was authorized in 1940 and commissioned January 30 1942.
Generalissimo Chiang Kai-Shek's forces recaptured Liucheng 20 miles north of Liuchow as part of the drive against Japanese control in southern corridor toward Indo China. Chinese units pushed Japs back to Chongtu and reached the Liu river on the Liuchow Kweilin road while the U S 14th Air Force attacked Japanese communications from north of the Yellow River to French Indo China.
U S War correspondent reports from Berlin July 5 touring bomb battered streets. He views Hitler’s Reich Chancellery hideaway, the Adlon hotel ruins, a Stalin lithograph, and wrecked International News Service offices. Russians aid American convoys and civilians wander dazed amid retreating destruction.

Police report a vehicle collision at 4:30 P.M. injuring Margaret Reichert on South Jefferson Street.

Three people were killed instantly when their car was struck by a fast freight train at the Erie crossing in Orangeville eight miles from Sharon. The victims were Howard D Thompson 50 Thornton Gor ham 60 both of Sharon and Mrs Helen Fogel 56 of Sharpsville. They were traveling to a cottage at Pymatuning Creek to join friends for a holiday outing.
Lawrence Gleisie a 25 year old awaiting induction drowned in Preso pond near Pittsburgh while three companions watched. Police Chief Downey said the men went to the pond for a midnight dip but none could swim.
Pittsburgh July 5 The Seventh War Loan sale of F bonds lagged as total individual bond sales reached 178 957 000, or 114 percent of the quota. EF bond sales stood at 82 126 000, or 35 percent of quota, in the 19 county Fort Pitt region.
General Spaatz was named commander of a new United States strategic air force for the Pacific area. The reorganization places the 8th Air Force under Lt Gen James A Doolittle and the 20th under Gen Curtis LeMay, with LeMay promoted to a higher command.
The Comet agency reported a new raid on east central Honshu focusing on Chiba Ibaraki and Tochigi prefectures. About 100 American fighters aided by B 29 Superfortresses attacked Japanese airfields in the area near Tokyo.
Navy forces assumed control of the Goodyear Tire and Rubber plants in Akron at 1 am after 19 days of closure amid labor dispute with CIO United Rubber Workers. The proclamation by President Truman placed the plants under naval authority with workers told to return to duties as a conference was planned to inform them. A city council meeting also reported a weed control bill favorably from committee, aiming to require property owners to cut down obnoxious weeds.
