A British steamer captain reported a distress radio last night indicating a U-boat attack off Halifax. The message said a sinking vessel was making for land while rescue efforts continued. the vessel’s name and position were not disclosed.
The last photo of Lieutenant Frank Baylies, the American Ace of Aces since Major Lufbery, was taken just before he was shot down behind German lines and captured weeks ago. Baylies had just been promoted to first lieutenant in the French army and credited with twelve official victories plus six more downed Boche machines.

Syracuse reports sixty five dead seven dying and at least 60 injured after a TNT plant explosion and fire at Semet Solvay in Split Rock near Syracuse. Fire preceded the blast by hours, destroying at least 15 buildings and prompting a citywide panic and mass evacuations.
London reports strong German attacks last night recaptured the greater part of the ground British held in a June 30 minor operation. British raids occurred near Boyelles Moyenneville and Morris with a few prisoners taken in each. The contested area lies near Albert on Picardy front.

London reports the death of Lord Rhondda, the British food controller, after a lengthy illness. He was 62, born David Alfred Thomas and known as the coal king of Wales. There is no heir to the title.
New York July 3 The will of James Gordon Bennett owner of the New York Herald bequeaths the residuary estate to a home for men who have worked on Manhattan newspapers and to financial aid for them. Mrs Bennett and a sister receive annual allowances of 50000 each. The remainder goes to a Bennett memorial home with three friends named to receive proceeds and direct newspaper property policies.

Joe Ross lies in a hospital bed with severe injuries feared to include a broken spine after an alleged assault by Pete Rendina and Paul Roscano. Fred Moltz filed assault charges at Alderman Mantz's court. a more serious charge may follow depending on Ross's condition. The defendants claim Ross fell drunk, not attacked. No hearing is scheduled until his condition clarifies.
Senator Gore reported another dispute over the wheat pricing clause of the agricultural appropriation bill. The senate voted to insist on the amendment fixing the price at 2.50 dollars for the current year.
The Rev S E Irvine of Butler will preach a farewell sermon before leaving for a pastorate at the First United Presbyterian church. The sermon in Butler is set for Sunday July 14 with his move to his new duties on July 21.
In Philadelphia a superior court order issued today grants a rule for superseders in the appeal of P. N. McNeal for a liquor license from Susquehanna. The return date is set for July 9.
Baby Betty Jane Kenna passed away at one day old. The infant was listed at 731 East Main Street. Funeral arrangements were not disclosed.
U S dispatches cite chaotic conditions in Russia with June 24 Vologda report from Ambassador David R. Francis. Archangel Duma members were arrested by order of the Soviet press and moved toward Moscow. Vologda Duma faced arrest for not executing Soviet orders.
