Seaplanes and aerial assets bolster American naval hunt for U boats in European waters. Air crews drop bombs aim at subs surfaced or submerged and use machine gun ammunition wireless gear and carrier pigeons for contact with destroyers. Dirigibles also aid the hunt as British and American destroyers coordinate efforts.
The Fourth of July celebration preparations are nearly finished with a committee meeting at the Board of Trade offices. A. Martin Graham will marshal the day with Greek and Balkan groups, Italian Polish and Roumanian contingents, and allied flag displays. The parade starts at 1 30 p m with all participants in line by 1 00 p m and several notable road dignitaries in attendance.
A wireless dispatch reports Italian forces regained the West Brenta defensive positions, capturing many Austrian officers among a large prisoner batch. J. E. Elder was sworn in as chief at city hall yesterday. He is the officer with the longest continuous service on the New Castle force and has served as patrolman and night lieutenant. He survived the Socialist administration upheaval and is expected to lead effectively.
James Bryson was arrested for breaking and entering Kay's plumbing shop on Croton avenue. Off duty officers responding to a call found Bryson on a cellar stair, attempting to force a door with an iron pipe. He was fined $25 and costs by the mayor or five days on the road gang.
E. E. McGill, John Elder Jr., William B. Veach and David Jameson were elected directors. The first three were directors last year. Eighteen were nominated by Commissioner Wm Kennedy, with ballotting for four of the 18. The annual meeting is this evening with reports to be presented.
There were no demands for teams to work today but tomorrow will be a big field day and may close the corn hoeing season. Next week will be busy for farm teams in hay and wheat fields as every man should be ready to respond to his team captain or report to the Employment Office for placement.
Dr. Washington Gladden a well known Congregationalist clergyman and writer died in Columbus Ohio from paralysis after two strokes the first in November and a second last Saturday morning He had been unconscious since then A Mr and Mrs O D Mott of Beckford street left Monday for an extended auto trip to visit relatives and friends
The council approved a $30 bill from Dunn Undertaking Co for moving the Shaffer family of three with smallpox from home to the municipal hospital and back. After discussion noting the price was high, the bill was ordered paid.
Mr. Beckman, superintendent of construction for the Mahoning and Shenango Railway and Light Company, asked council to excuse his company from repaving Highland avenue this year if it could fund repaving its section of East Washington street. Council agreed this condition, and Beckman planned a definite report to City Engineer Milholland later that afternoon.
Germany proposed terms to recognize a Polish Kingdom per Abend Zeitung Munich. Army limited to 90 000 men. Preferential trade rights to Germany and Austria for 50 years. German allies excluded from Polish jurisdiction.
In a July Fourth lead up five boys including Robert Rodgers Robert Michaels Cecil Suber Eugene Sullivan and Harlan Confer are accused of stealing 186 dollars worth of fireworks from Jake Conti. They deny the charge and face a future hearing.
Nine new cases of tuberculosis were reported this morning to the city health department. No other cases were reported.
The Daughters of the American Revolution chapter in Lawrence set up a second kettle in the Stritmater store on Long Avenue after a 10 day run at the first location. Residents contribute generously, with Mrs. Carbaugh donating a silver dollar with a hole from Bedford Springs and Mrs. J. L. Underwood gifting a 100 year old silver pitcher in memory of her son who died before service.
A Midlands shell filling factory explosion killed 62 workers last night, according to the ministry of munitions. The extent of injuries is not yet known.
The farmers institutes of Lawrence county will be held this fall at New Wilmington Eastbrook and Mahoning Grange hall. Further information may be obtained by contacting chairman Dorris L. Fulkman in New Wilmington.
President Wilson plans to take over all transports and telegraph lines once Congress authorizes power. He aims to place Burleson in charge of the communication system with the post office department, seeking federal control beyond war powers or any six month postwar limit. Aswell seeks signatures to end congressional recess pending his plan. A major House dispute looms over the authority and timing of action.
Frank Sissone pleaded guilty before Alderman Mantz to assault and battery. John Thomas, a Croton street car motorman, said Sissone struck him after objecting to Sissone boarding with a large tree chunk. Sissone paid a small fine and costs and was released.
The Belgian steamship Chilear was sunk by shell fire from a German submarine 1 400 miles off the Atlantic coast on June 21. Twenty five survivors were picked up four days later by a sailing vessel. The Chilear was 2966 gross tons.
A morning collision at New Castle Junction between Baltimore and Ohio passenger trains from Pittsburg to Chicago sideswiped another B and O train. The baggage car and engine of Train No. 67 were wrecked and damage occurred to the other engine. No injuries reported. The accident happened about 6 30 a m.
American troops in a night assault west of Chateau Thierry captured the village of Vaux and its railway station. They took 275 German prisoners, including several officers, and seized machine guns and war materials. Paris reports confirm the advance on the Mare front.
Beef prices across districts show a drop in wholesale rates this week, with first grade beef previously fetching 26 cents per pound now selling at 22 to 24 cents. The government controls heavier cattle 600 pounds or more, restricting their sale to the public, while lighter cattle 400 pounds will be retailed nationwide.
Ten men sat the civil service exam for city fire and police posts last night. Eight competed for the fire department and two for the police department. Tom McMahon, a local prizefighter, was among the two testing for the police force.
Local draft boards report no action against draftees employed in new work. Men in sick call are voluntary seeking other positions and the board anticipates little trouble adjusting the situation.
