Reagan vetoes clean water bill as Congress nears override

PLO says US firms paid to free Jacobsen in Lebanon

English language resolution sparks accusation of racism

In Concord New Hampshire a move to make English the official language is denounced as racist and un American by Action For Franco Americans of the Northeast president Real P Gilbert. He noted New Hampshire's one million residents include 275000 of French descent and 60000 speak French while testifying at a House hearing on a resolution urging Congress to designate English as the official language to foster uniformity and preserve national unity. The committee is to vote in early February.

Casey taps Schafer to head Pennsylvania State Police

Governor Casey nominates Maj John Schafer to lead the 4000 member force promising to wipe out racism and lift morale. Schafer, 45, has been acting commissioner since Jan 20 and will stay until Senate confirmation. Casey also names Maj Ronald Sharpe as deputy commissioner the first Black man in that role.
