Foreign Minister Sadegh Ghotbzadeh said Canadians who helped smuggle six Americans out of Iran risked the lives of the 50 captives held at the besieged U S Embassy. He cited Kurdish and Azeri fighting in Iran as fresh unrest claiming dozens of guard casualties while officials in Washington avoided formal comment.

Dennis Alexander 23 of 1315 S Jefferson St and John B Thomas 18 of 314 Bell Ave were charged with criminal homicide and burglary in connection with the February 17 death of James W Cook 58 of 21 E Big Run. They were jailed awaiting a preliminary hearing set for Feb 8 before District Magistrate Howard Hanna with no bond. A $2000 reward was offered by Cook family. investigation continues.
A New England Journal of Medicine study reports sulfinpyrazone, a drug for arthritis, reduced sudden death in heart attack patients by 75 percent during the six months after hospital discharge. The 34 month, multi center trial involved 26 centers and about 100 doctors, comparing treated and control groups.
AMMET will sell its Ellwood-New Castle Road plant with about 30 workers laid off after a six month IAM Local 1671 strike. About ten firms expressed interest in parts of the plant, primarily land and buildings, or equipment. Asking price is 350000 dollars with five acres and up to 25 more acres. In Washington the American Iron & Steel Institute unveiled a 100 page white paper urging government measures to revive the domestic steel industry for the 1980s. It calls for 5.7 billion dollars yearly in modernization and debt retirement and warns that without action 20 percent of production capacity could be cut and employment fall from 449,000 in 1978 to 360,000 by 1988 while imports undermine recovery.
State budget action moves to restore 31 jobs in the Division of Vital Statistics New Castle office and 18 positions in branches across Pennsylvania. An amendment adding 336000 dollars to a 16.9 million supplemental appropriation would fund the reinstatement, restoring staffing cut due to prior budget limits.
The State Senate again rejected four Gov Thornburgh appointees to Slippery Rock State College Board of Trustees, leaving two vacancies at the upcoming quarterly meeting. The rejected nominees include James Campbell, John Watson, Adrianne Lippert, and Donald Moss, while Leo Stepanian and Nicholas Spudich continue to serve until replacements are confirmed.
