Rome rejects Moscow note accusing the United States of violating the peace treaty by assigning fleet units to the Mediterranean and making courtesy calls in Italian ports. The foreign office reminded the Kremlin that US naval visits require formal permission under normal diplomacy.

Roy Powell proprietor of the Airport Inn at Parkstown Corners guarded the structure as firemen arrived from Union Town ship and Neshannock township to battle a blaze at 3 45 this morning. Damage about 1500 covered by insurance was reported by Powell and Fire Chief W R Stoner. The fire started in a staircase and likely stemmed from defective wiring as Powell reached the scene and contained the initial flames.
The ferry Gov. Herbert R. OConor was freed after 14 hours stuck in Chesapeake Bay ice near Annapolis. The vessel carried 150 people including 21 crew members and moved to Sandy Point after another ferry broke through the ice. Four freighters sought Coast Guard help against ice floes.
More than 30 airplanes and two U S Coast Guard cutters resumed Atlantic search for a four engine British air liner missing 300 miles northeast of Bermuda with 31 aboard. Coast Guard reports said searches were negative. Among the passengers was Sir Arthur Coningham former Allied air commander in North Africa and Normandy. The company owner said hope was fading and all aboard were feared lost. At Bermuda Hamilton field 30 planes will cover about 68 000 square miles.
William Frew 67 president of Carnegie Institute and chairman of Carnegie Tech board died of a heart attack at his home. A retired attorney and Pittsburgh pioneer, he led the institute since 1943, succeeding his father. Survived by widow Margaretta Park.
Banks across France resumed ordinary business today after a two day shutdown ordered by the government. Depositors sought guidance on 5000 franc notes withdrawn from circulation while the Paris Stock Exchange also reopened amid a general price decline except for government bonds.

Rescue teams found the bodies of all 12 occupants of an American Air Force C-47 that vanished in the Alpine foothills near Digne. During the search, a B-17 with 10 crewmen crashed nearby, and eight bodies were recovered from the C-47 wreckage by French ski patrols.
Firemen Clyde R. Rohrer and James D. Boyd were overcome by smoke while fighting a cellar fire at the Moser Wallpaper Company on North Mill street. They were treated at Jameson Memorial hospital and discharged, returning home Friday afternoon after recovering from the incident.
A late Friday fire destroyed a nearly completed bungalow owned by Mr. and Mrs. Walter Boron on Miller Avenue. Firemen arrived at 9 55 and could not save the structure. The loss is about 3000 dollars, insured, with two puppies perishing in the blaze.
