A cold wave followed storms that killed at least 25 people and injured hundreds. Tornadoes in three southern states left 14 dead and about 60 injured as homes and stores were destroyed and fires started. Power lines were knocked down and travel warned dangerous amid ice formation.
Rain lifted Shenango river and Neshannock creek levels while a cold snap ends a warm spell. Drivers face fines if license stickers and new driver’s licenses are not displayed after midnight as 1947 cards take effect. new plates due April 1.
United States weather statistics show a daily high of 61 and a low of 32 with 0.89 inches of precipitation including rain and trace snow. River stage stands at 11.4 feet. Figures from the same date last year recorded a high of 45 and a low of 38 with 0.02 inches of precipitation.
Charleston police announced three people were cleared by lie-detector tests in the death of 28 year old Elizabeth Sattler daughter of West Virginia State Labor Commissioner Charles Sattler. Police said the death appeared accidental with the victim found near her home after being struck on a street corner.
Tokyo dispatch reports General Douglas MacArthur ordering an official halt to plans for a 2.5 million person general strike in Japan over the Yoshida government. Strike leaders capitulated after being summoned to allied headquarters. Separately in Washington, Congress presses to resolve the rent ceiling mystery with White House denials of responsibility for the order and statements from officials.
Sen Bridges of New Hampshire called for a firmer U.S. stance against Soviet Russia, branding Moscow as prompting an anti American drive. He charged pending treaties merely confirm Soviet domination in Europe and accused the USSR of breaking promises in China. The remark followed Sen Vandenberg’s harsh critique of Poland’s elections.
Pittsburgh officials ordered all 100 crossing guards who are women to wear flat shoes. Assistant Superintendent Andrew Charles called spike heels a menace and said flats prevent turned ankles, with the city liable for injuries.

A settlement could lead to Denmark granting or denying U S bases or selling Greenland. Denmark says Norway cannot negotiate with the United States until the Denmark Norway dispute is resolved. The United States press for permanent base talks.
Captain Joseph McCann of the Pennsylvania state police spoke on Highway Safety at The Castleton Hotel in New Castle. He urged that New Castle can be made safe with practical steps and officials who will fix traffic tags, arguing a safer city is achievable for any community.
A Shenango Township meeting at Shenango High School urged circulating a petition to place the liquor sales issue on the June primary ballot. To qualify, the petition must show 25 percent of votes of the highest candidate in the last election. Rev. Earl Collins directed the gathering with Anti Saloon League staffer M. R. Everett speaking and a film shown. Committees were named for finance organization and publicity.
Pittsburgh police hunted a young bandit who first ordered a milkshake and then stole all the cash from the Union Drug Company in the Swissvale district. Clerk John Collins, 16, reported the man escaped with 540 dollars.
Mrs. Anna R. Daly aged 74 of 17 North Beaver Street passed away. funeral and burial details were not provided in the fragment. She is survived by family listed in the unprinted obituary.

A German denazification court sentenced Hans FritzSche former Nazi radio propaganda chief to nine years hard labor for wartime Axis activities. Fritzsche is among three acquitted defendants from the Nürnberg War crimes trials.
On February 7 a public hearing will be held in Pittsburgh to discuss the proposed Lake Erie to Ohio River ship canal from Ashtabula to Rochester. New Castle officials including Mayor Haven and County Commissioners will attend along with army engineers who surveyed the route.
