Seventh grader gives back with care packages for cancer center
Charlotte Bevan of Laurel Middle School led nine community service projects after her mother Ellen’s breast cancer diagnosis. Projects supported Hillman Cancer Center patients, hospice, veterans, and shelters, including care packages with notes. Recipients praised the student’s effort and encouragement.

Prison board struggles to name chairman
Lawrence County Prison Board members shunned the chair job during the reorganization. Commissioner Chris Samato agreed to lead temporarily after District Attorney Joshua Lamancusa, the outgoing chair, declined reelection. The board includes three commissioners, the district attorney, sheriff, president judge and county controller. Lamancusa noted his term expires year end and he will seek reelection. Samato, initially reluctant, was urged by Dan Vogler and others who warned against a repeat of past unease.
