Officials seek to move fuel to aid hard hit regions
Canadian and U S officials race to divert natural gas to the East Midwest and South as a deepening shortage curtails heating for hundreds of thousands. Energy chief James Schlesinger warns some homes may lose gas in days. Congress stalls an emergency energy bill while Canada approves exports and Houston pipelines arrange Eastward transfers to ease shortages.

Altoona Firemen Lose Pay Fight Over 48 Hour Week
Altoona firemen lost a bid for extra pay for eight extra hours per week after arbitration rejected the request. Firefighters had sought 416 hours more per year, arguing their 48 hour week justified higher pay despite parity with other city employees. The dispute centered on wages and benefits, not the broader contract, and a 650 dollar wage increase along with 250 dollars in extra benefits was agreed for all workers. The firemen had dropped a demand to reduce the week to 42 hours to avoid costs of hiring additional personnel.
