Townships object to board action in Lawrence County
Five Lawrence County townships led by Neshannock Union Shenango Mahoning and Wilmington accuse the chamber foundation and economic development groups of excluding them after Morgan Boyd was removed from the board. They note the Jan. 14 vote replacing Boyd with Loretta Spielvogel and cite his Jan. 12 guest column opposing Forward Lawrence.

Laurel grad leads Friends of Tonga relief effort
Michael Hassett, a 2007 Laurel High School graduate, founded Friends of Tonga with his wife Chiara Collette to aid Tonga after a tsunami. The pair, both Peace Corps volunteers, started the group in 2018 to boost educational opportunities, opening a school in Ta'anga on 'Eua with Schools for Children of the World.

Former fireman sentenced to house arrest for theft
Carmen Merolillo, 68, a former Union Township fireman and treasurer, was sentenced by Lawrence County Common Pleas Judge J. Craig Cox to a year of house arrest after repaying restitution to the Union Township Volunteer Fire Department. He will also be on probation for three years and must avoid further contact with the department.

Bills propose SIB in relief to small businesses
In Harrisburg the Pennsylvania Senate eyed $1 billion in aid for small businesses via two bills. One bill would create a $500 million interest free loan program and the other a $500 million grant program funded through new tax credits. The measures, heard by the Senate Committee on Community, Economic & Recreational Development, target firms with 500 or fewer employees that were shut down as non essential at the start.
