President Reagan stated one major regret over actions in Iran, taking full responsibility for the outcome. He defended the Strategic Defense Initiative as the most positive defense program to date and pledged to protect U S interests and allies in the Middle East while opposing terrorist blackmail and Contra rebel funding.
Reagan's State of the Union drew praise from key GOP leaders who say he is back and a dominant force. Democrats controlling Congress pledged tough battles, criticizing rhetoric and signaling opposition to aid to the Contras and SDI. Clashes marked the address with Republicans applauding while Democrats sat, forecasting a partisan two years.
President Reagan, in his State of the Union, admits mistakes and accepts responsibility for the Iran arms affair. He says his only major regret is that the gamble failed to open channels and win freedom for American hostages in Lebanon. He glosses over the scandal, defends the aims of arming Iran, and avoids naming those responsible.
Nearly 1,600 inmates were under heavy guard after a violent eight hour disturbance at Western Penitentiary. 31 inmates were injured as 90 officers halted clashes and new fires sparked during inmate relocations. Investigators say the blaze was set intentionally amid overcrowding concerns raised by Auditor General Bailey.
Robert Asher former chairman of the Republican state committee was sentenced to one year and one day on multiple counts in a bribery case tied to a scheme with co defendant R Budd Dwyer. He faces a $205050 fine and will report to prison on February 16 while bail is reviewed. Dwyer killed himself a day before sentencing.
Harrisburg officials led by Attorney General LeRoy Zimmerman pressed harsher penalties for all drug dealers. He urged stiffer punishment for dealers who corrupt children or traffic crack, deny prison time to many offenders, and treat marijuana as a major illegal drug. He also called for stricter penalties for selling prescription drugs illegally and for counting cash on arrest to gauge major trafficking.
Washington United Press International reports Congress fast tracked a 50 million emergency aid bill to provide food and shelter for the homeless during a severe winter storm. The House approved the measure 296 to 79, transferring funds from FEMA disaster relief to the food and shelter program, with opposition from Rep. Walker over the impact on disaster readiness.
