Aly Maher Pasha took office under martial law amid signals he will push Egypt's anti-British policy in the Suez and Sudan regions. Mustapha el Nahas Pasha said the new premier promised to pursue anti-British policies as crowds chanted in suburban Cairo.
King Farouk dismissed Nahas Pasha’s government for failing to maintain peace and order. The monarch then restored Aly Maher to power in a rapid counter-move, leaving Nahas Pasha with an unofficial ouster.
High waters of the Shenango River kept state highway crews busy placing and removing warning signs toward the Harbor bridge. Over the weekend the river rose again, flooding low streets in Butler yesterday and forcing motorists to detour through the city.

The House Un American Activities Committee ordered Hollywood producer Sidney Buchman arrested after he refused to appear at a hearing on communism in film. Acting chairman Walter Pa. instructed the sergeant at arms to locate and incarcerate Buchman after his lawyer sought a court order to cancel the subpoena.
Prolonged rainfall cresting streams prompted evacuations and property loss across Lawrence County. Rivers inundated roads and cellars with up to two to three feet of water in Ellwood City homes. Fire crews rescued several families while Connoquenessing rose to ten feet, triggering power and gas shutoffs in Franklin Township and evacuations in Shady Rest Rustic Park and Fombelle.
Police report Earl L. Butler a 52 year old trucker and Mrs Madelyn Deykes a Dunmore Republican leader were found dead last night in Scranton. County coroner Paul E K said the couple apparently died by their own hands with suspected poisoning awaiting chemical analysis. Butler survived by his wife and five children. Deykes survived by three children.
Across Ohio heavy rains caused rivers to swell and flood many communities. The Ohio River at Cincinnati was 47.5 feet and expected to rise to 58 or 59 feet by Thursday as emergencies expanded in Marietta and Zanesville with over 1 000 and 800 residents evacuated respectively.

At least 2 000 people are homeless and four dead or missing as towns face crests up to a dozen feet. The Ohio National Guard is urged to assist while Governor Lausbheig coordinates flood response. Evacuations are anticipated for thousands more over the next two days across West Virginia and Ohio towns.
