A career move is announced as Pennsylvania Railroad signs on to join operations with Long Island Railroad. The agreement outlines integrated timetables and shared routes, reflecting a major shift in regional rail coordination.
Hotels of the city valued at one million dollars with headquarters in New York City. General Superintendent H W Thornton of the Pennsylvania lines promoted to assistant general superintendent of the Long Island Railroad and to assume duties February 1. Headquarters will be in New York. no successor named yet. Continued on Page Seven.
Two city real estate men, under an attorney, valued hotel properties on Washington Street and surrounding streets, totaling about 1.06 million dollars. Leslie house at 150000 and Fountain Inn at 125000 led the estimates as part of a broader effort to show money involved in local hotel and brewery interests.
New Castle plans to protest a state plan to drain the Pymatuning swamp in Crawford County. A Harrisburg hearing on the drainage is set for Wednesday afternoon February 1, with city officials and industry representatives likely to participate. The swamp supplies Shenango River water to New Castle and its industries, and draining could lower river levels in summer. A council meeting may appoint a representative to attend the hearing.
The weekly bank statement reports rises in reserve on deposits by 3,266,750 and on deposits excluding U S by 3,260,175. Loans advance by 28,165,600, specie by 1,254,900, legal tenders by 2,208,200, and deposits by 40,785,400 while circulation falls by 188,800. Total loans reach 1,273,974,700 with a bank surplus of 39,783,650 versus 34,078,000 last year and 28,664,050 two years ago.
Joseph Buntman sues Mahoning and Shenango Railway and Light for 5000 damages claiming negligence during August 16 track repairs on West Washington Street near Norris left only a narrow driveway. His wagon wheel caught a track frog, he was thrown and injured his head shoulders and spine, with the latter described as permanent and reducing earning power.
Ellwood City January 28 Prof Alexander Watson principal of schools was exonerated by the school board at a special meeting. A three member committee found no evidence to justify removal and no petition was presented. Miss Marietta Broe of Highland avenue is recovering from a fever attack of grip.
Al Bane of Backey says he was so drunk he does not recall holding up a Colorado & Southern train near Pueblo. He wounded his wrist during the escape after Rio Grande Special Agent McCafferty exchanged five shots and forced surrender. He admitted to robbing 12 Pullman passengers of 500 dollars while returning the money a woman handed him.
In South Sharon last night the city personal workers held a well attended meeting led by T. D. Allen with speakers Round Butler and Mrs. T. D. Allen. Mrs. Allen urged personal work with women and the family altar. Four conversions were reported. A Sunday 3 PM talk at the Presbyterian church is announced and a men's meeting follows at 3 PM in the Methodist church. Through Sunday, 140 converts have been secured.
St. Luke's A. M. E. Zion church will extend revival services for another week with evening sessions at 7 30 and afternoon services on Wednesday Thursday and Friday at 3 o'clock. The pastor L M Upperman invites all to attend and pray. Miss Eleanor Wallace of Clayton street who had been seriously ill is now recovering.
Congressional action centers on whether Taft's Canada reciprocity agreement will reach a vote. Senate finance and Ways and Means committees show no support, with high protectionist majorities. Democrats plan to oppose to allow a Democratic House next session to lead tariff reform. Continued on Page Seven.

Two C and O freight trains collided head on in Blountsville Indiana early today. Engineer James Edward and fireman Sherock on train No 73 were killed while brakeman John L Swisser was believed fatally hurt and several others injured. Officials blame failure to carry out orders.
Police suspend the search for Dorothy Arnold, daughter of Francis R. Arnold, believing she is hidden in New York unharmed. Deputy Commissioner Flynn says the family has not been on the level with police and hints at a love affair behind the mystery. The father calls the police stance cruel and fears abduction and death.
The Brotherhood of the First Methodist church held a well attended Friday evening meeting. A 6:30 p m banquet was followed by program items with J Will Neff presiding. Attorney H K Gregory and Rev A B McCormick spoke on government by commission and Captain M S Marquis spoke on the ship canal.

University of Missouri sociologist Professor Charles Ellwood claimed blondes are favored in love by men of all ages. Local dispatches show mixed reaction, suggesting acceptance varies by region.
Wellesley mass January report shows 20 engaged girls all brunettes with none blond, while brunettes dominate class marriages. In Philadelphia a clerk notes license data favoring brunettes and cites Prof Ellwood's theory.
In Key West Florida on January 28 J A D McCurdy could not start the Key West Havana flight as wind and sea rose to 15 miles per hour. The destroyers held position along the course while McCurdy awaited calmer air and another chance to begin.
Laura Schenk, wife of Wheeling packer John O. Schenk, was released from county jail on her own recognizance until the March term after Judge Lewis Jordan granted the motion. A restraining order bars her from entering her island home or seeing her two children and husband. Prosecutor J. B. Republicans will seat to allow body to be organized with England as possible president or other Republican chosen by Democrats. Troops and impeachment threats loom while arbitration shifts pace. Governor threatens protection if Republicans face trouble.
