Reports say a massive explosion at a German colliery killed numerous miners with many others injured or missing. Rescue efforts were underway as scenes at the mine mouth drew families and crowds amid fear of further deaths. Paris reports twenty miners killed at the Lieven colliery near Lille.

Bell was arrested in Brooklyn after eloping with a wealthy Flushing girl whose father opposed their marriage. The motive hinges on Bell’s insistence Townsend killed his wife. He refuses to comment.
