Gunman Kills Film Maker In Hollywood Parking Lot
Laurence Merrick 50, creator of a 1972 Manson documentary, was shot in the back outside his film school in Hollywood. The attacker, a heavyset man in his 20s wearing blue jeans and a yellow knit cap, fled the scene after the hit. The suspects held the family hostage for about eight hours before police and FBI moved in. two brothers Tyrone Mathis 25 and Jobn 19 were captured, with three more suspects still sought. In Waynesburg Pennsylvania a predawn blaze destroyed a two story frame house killing Ramona 8 Barbara 6 and Deborah 4 daughters of Mr and Mrs Frank Riger. A tugboat transferring gasoline from a barge in the Houston Ship Channel exploded and sank, starting a dock and an oil tanker on fire. Three men aboard the tug Nathan B were missing while nine others, including crew from the linker San Francisco, were injured.
