Tokyo January 26 Gen Douglas MacArthur celebrated his 70th birthday receiving world leader congratulations. His 12 year old son Arthur surprised him with a pastel floral painting and a five sided ash tray matching earlier gifts. He called the painting impressive though modest.
Federal mediators planned a two or three day cooling off period before attempting to settle the Chrysler strike that pulled 112000 CIO UAW off their jobs. Walter Reuther said the union would resume negotiations at any time on a 10 cent an hour wage rise or pension package.

Former Vice President Henry Wallace testified before the House Un-American Activities committee that he was not responsible for or aware of wartime uranium shipments to the Soviet Union. He said lend-lease, not his bureau, cleared such shipments and he had no knowledge of licenses for uranium exports until 1946.

Across 330 million people guns boomed and crowds celebrated under flag arches though violence in Bombay injured eight policemen and led to 50 arrests as Rajendra Prasad was sworn in as president at Durbar Hall.
Temperatures in Mercury hit a record 75 degrees, surpassing the 74.8 degree mark set in 1906 and matching Pittsburgh station records. The unseasonable warmth brings robins, early blooming flowers, and unusual vegetation growth across the county as residents enjoy shirt sleeves and talk of swimming sightings.
In Jakarta a self styled private army led by Captain R P P Westerling reportedly seized the police barracks as part of a raid on the newly formed United States of Indonesia. The panel includes mothers and fathers vowed to judge solely on evidence, with two alternates to be added after final juror is seated.
The First Federal Savings and Loan Association of New Castle held its annual meeting on Wednesday evening in the association office. Executive Vice President Norman E. Clark reported that 1949 was one of the best years in the firm's 62 years, with total lending for home purchase and construction and refinancing totaling 1,333,390 dollars, including 548,200 dollars of this amount.
The Senate Armed Services Committee agreed to recall Navy Secretary Matthews to clarify his testimony on the ousting of Admiral Louis E. Denfeld as chief of naval operations. Chairman Tydings dropped opposition to further inquiries into the unification row, and Matthews is expected to testify behind closed doors next Monday or Tuesday.

He stated at a news conference that he does not intend to turn his back on Hiss and refused to discuss trial details, emphasizing loyalty to a friend.
Alger Hiss remains in seclusion at a lawyer friend’s home as his counsel prepare an appeal while Secretary Acheson says he does not intend to turn his back on Hiss. Eight jurors and the trial judge were polled for reaction, with one juror calling the statement surprising. others declined comment. Federal Judge Goddard offered no comment.
The Lawrence county blood bank marks its first anniversary after starting January 26 1949 with Paul D Mooney as its first donor. Since opening in 1948 the bank has typed 2181 people donated for 761 pints drawn serving Jameson Memorial New Castle Ellwood City and Mary Evans Maternity hospitals. No charge is made for donated blood. a fee is charged for some services.
