The Ohio River flood swells to more than half a million refugees and about 150 deaths as flood waters devastate cities from Pittsburgh to Memphis. Officials note property losses exceed 100 million dollars while pestilence and hunger follow the deluge.
WPA Administrator Harry Hopkins announced 100 trucks loaded with supplies are rushing into Louisville after a call with Mayor Miller. Efforts aim to bring more doctors and nurses. Hopkins said water is stationary and the city lacks rescue manpower, with workers dropping from 5,000 to 2,500 due to overwork and fatigue.
Shenango River reached a high stage of 16 feet at midnight surpassing prior records and then began to recede. Businesses west of Grant street pumped water from cellars while the Pymatuning Dam held back vast volumes, its reservoir up six inches as it absorbed two and a half billion gallons in 11 hours.
