Ottawa awaits official report on the fatal clash between the Canadian schooner Josephine K and U.S. Coast Guard off New York. Captain William P. Cluett of Nova Scotia is believed dead after a coast guard firing as the vessel, within a 12 mile zone, resisted a liquor seizure. Canada will decide actions based on whether the ship was within territorial waters.
Governor Gifford Pinchot announces steps toward replacing the coal and iron police with a state chosen force. He orders all commissions to end June 30, 1931 and plans to seek legislative approval for a new system. He will invite operators, miners, and the public from Western Pennsylvania to confer. The aim is to prevent outrages such as the Baroosky killing and ensure police protection under state control.
Harold Lloyd Jr weighs four pounds at a Hollywood hospital after birth at 10 last night two months early. Doctors give him a fifty fifty chance of life. Miss Florence Groth of Shaker Heights Ohio has been elected May queen at Westminster College replacing ill Miss Jane Ralston of Wilkinsburg. Groth is a junior active in YWCA yearbook staff and Alpha Gamma Delta. she has played on class athletic teams and was runner-up in tennis two years ago.
The Mayflower yacht, once the floating White House for five presidents, sank to the Delaware River bed near the Navy yard after a blaze in which fire boats fought the flames from shore. The loss is estimated near 1 million dollars. An investigation will probe the cause and seaworthiness.

Michael Barker aged 72 of 502 East Reynolds street died in New Castle hospital from injuries suffered when he walked into a car driven by Homer Pringle of 937 Warren avenue on Long and Belmont avenue Sunday night. Pringle said he traveled 20 to 25 miles per hour and stopped within six to seven feet after the collision. Police report.

Irwin Pa January 26 Inability to obtain textbooks kept Irwin public school pupils on vacation for ten more days after a disastrous fire that destroyed the 20 room building. A meeting of the board of directors decided to open temporary classrooms in the Methodist Episcopal church and the Moose hall as soon as books arrive. Plans for a new building will wait until insurance losses are settled.
A coast guard patrol boat fired a shot in Fort Pond Bay near Greensport to halt the rum runner Temiscorda. Its gasoline tanks were pierced, a cargo of about a thousand cases of liquor seized, and the boat with six crew members was towed to New London Connecticut for custody.

Edward S. Edwards former United States Senator and former New Jersey Governor was found dead at his home 131 Kensington Avenue Jersey City. Police report early indications point to gunshot wounds. Edwards was discovered by his friend Charles Baumgarten who contacted authorities after not arriving for a prior engagement. A maid reported she could not awake him.

Patsy Matteo aged 20 of 215 S Ashland avenue is in the New Castle hospital with a broken leg after jumping from a second story window to elude police. Officers were told Matteo, a boarder, was armed with a hatchet at 215 South Ashland before he fled. An ambulance transported him to the hospital after the fall.
New York January 26 International complications were not expected after the fatal shooting of Captain William P. Cluett of Lun enburg Nova Scotia on a Canadian rum runner schooner off Ambrose light at the harbor entrance. Coast guard authorities say the one pound shell fired by Coast Guard cutter 145 in pursuit occurred within the 12 mile limit. Valuable liquor seized and the schooner was illuminated by searchlights as guardsmen dispatched three other craft to the scene.
Miss Ann Dempsey a nurse at St. Vincent's hospital Osceola Mills died in Erie Pennsylvania after a car she rode in with Dr Meyers Nelson was struck by a truck. Dempsey was crushed to death in the collision occurring on January 26.
