Berlin reports that the German admiralty claims a British cruiser and two torpedo boats were sunk in the battle west of Heligoland. An official statement says a German torpedo boat finished the cruiser with two well aimed shots after heavy gunfire. A German airship witnessed the sinking.
Jury verdict finds W. H. Cox awarded 10375 from the Pennsylvania Railroad for land taken and damages after the company condemned additional right of way west of Mahoning town covered bridge. Rail firm’s attorney calls the verdict too high and plans a possible new trial. Case pursued since last week with extensive stenographic notes.
President R M Russell announced evangelistic services for college students at New Wilmington. Dr W E McCullough of Pittsburgh will visit the college to conduct a ten day series of meetings starting soon.
Washington reports Francis Sayre the White House baby, now labeled the shoe king, has grown rapidly with a collection of footwear from manufacturers nationwide. In under two weeks he has received samples of many styles along with boastful letters praising the products.
A New Wilmington high school sleighing party of 35 traveling from Odd Fellows hall at Pulaski had two bobs overturn on the road. Miss Aurel Anderson fainted but recovered. she was kept at a farmhouse overnight and returned home next morning. The horses broke away then were recaptured and hitched to the sled.
Robert Ward died at age 90 at his Coaltown home after six months of illness. A England native and Salvation Army member, he lived 47 years in Neshannock township and guided many to Christian life on city street services. Surviving are his children James Sarah Ward Mrs Samuel Simons Thomas W and John. Funeral arrangements to be announced.
Malmoe reports the Gazelle was torpedoed by a submarine in the Baltic on Monday and reached Sassnitz damaged. Copenhagen says hostile subs attacked a German squadron off southern Sweden dispersing units into port. Paris notes 300 French casualties near Ypres with La Bassee offensives. Traffic in the Baltic halted by subs. A German ferry turned back near Cape Arkona due to submarines.
Harrisburg January 26 Senator Graff introduces bill at Home Rule league request to repeal the public service law. The aim is to strip boroughs and municipalities of state operations and commission jurisdiction. Petitions claim the law unjustly discriminates against cities without municipal plants at passage. Mayor Tyler leads the local home rule group with New Castle New Wilmington and Ellwood City affiliates.
Mr and Mrs Samuel G Saklem of North Mill street rejoice over the birth of a son who arrived with two fully developed teeth in the lower jaw.
Samuel Baker of 509 Denver avenue entered a White Rock Bullet at Zelienople where it earned second prize and at New Castle where it captured first prize. Baker attended both poultry shows.
County commissioners received bills for confinement of Lawrence county prisoners in 1914. Western penitentiary bill was 2584.53 with 27 inmates at times. Alleyheny county workhouse 4412.50 and Morganza reform school 3919.74 totaling 10916.77 dollars.
Harrisburg Pa January 26 The bill by Senator Clark Erie to limit initiative and referendum in third class cities gains backing from city solicitors. It requires 100 qualified voters to petition, 20 percent of mayoral votes sign within 10 days for council action or a public vote within 90 days, with extensions possible. One special election allowed every six months. ordinances passed may be challenged by a 20 percent petition triggering a special election. certain ordinances exempt.
The United Fraternities of Lawrence County began as six city lodges planning a Mothers Day united movement. A second meeting formed a permanent group and a Casade Park outing grew into a major city picnic. In December 1914 the name changed to United Fraternities of Lawrence County. Tonight’s meeting at Modern Woodmen hall will elect officers and plan Mothers Day activities for 1915.
Arrangements set for Gatty Sellars world famous English organist and composer to appear at First Methodist church in a free organ recital Sunday evening at 8 30 following church services. A free will offering will be taken.
Mr and Mrs N V McMillin of New Castle announce the engagement of their daughter Florence Viola McMillin to William Henry Rhodehouse Jr of Pittsburg The wedding is planned for early spring The bride elect is a Slippery Rock Normal School graduate class of 09 Rhodehouse is son of Mr and Mrs Wm H Rhodehouse of Greenville Pa and works as traveling auditor for the Western Allegheny Railroad Co with headquarters in Pittsburg
Rome reports Italy’s military and naval buildup complete with 1,260,000 front line troops and 2,100,000 reserves, a mobilized navy under the Duke of Abruzzi, 1 billion francs in war funds, 1,000,000 tons of wheat, and 7000 women volunteering as nurses as Italy prepares to join the Allies.
The science hall, remodelled and refurnished at substantial cost, is placed in service again. A dedicatory service was planned with Dr. J. A. Brashear of Pittsburg, but the dedication will occur during commencement week, with Dr. Brashear in attendance on the Saturday of that week.

City Engineer Milholland recommends giving the contractor until May 1 to correct work so curb lights meet specifications and can be accepted. Problems include doors that cannot open, broken components, misaligned brackets, improper conduit placement, and rubber covered cable violating specs.
District Attorney Clyde V. Ailey and Attorney Thomas W. Dickey travel to Washington to argue the commonwealth case against Tony Rossi before the United States Supreme Court. Rossi, who ran a Lowellville shop and took orders in Hillsville, was convicted of illegal liquor sales during Dickey’s term. He appealed after a workhouse sentence and a rejected new trial, contending interstate commerce. The lawyers will contend the interstate act was not meant to allow such dealer solicitation and delivery.
Sam Costella was arrested last evening on the charge of selling liquor without a license. Constable R. C. Gallagher preferred the charge. He was jailed in default of bail pending a hearing. Costella resides on South Cedar Street.
Obituaries list Mrs. William Easton aged 59 and Robert Ward 90 with connections to Coaltown and Major A. J Pentecost of Pittsburg. Edith Phyllis Lucas aged 9 of 1208 Williams St and Campbell aged 49 of Prospect appear in the record.
