The county mourns as a venerable minister and widely known figure is reported dead Sunday night on Beaver Street. Friends and colleagues recall his long service and calm leadership in the community.
Rev. William J. Moffatt of 78 North Beaver street is found dead in Davenport Iowa. His twin Francis J. Moffatt of Davenport is summoned after his brother’s death. The brothers, born September 8 1835, were lifelong ministers renowned in Lawrence County.
Mrs Emmelineshire and J Moffatt are guests of their relatives in Haworth Street and North Street areas. The list includes Mrs Albert R Elliott of Steubenville and daughter Mrs John Alford Bartley of Indianapolis visiting the Thompson household for a few days.
The prosecution by Theodore Roosevelt against the New York World over Panama Canal charges was quashed by Federal Judge Hough for lack of federal jurisdiction. The case, tied to articles published in October 1908, involved Roosevelt and others including Taft and Cromwell. The judge suggested appeal to the U S Supreme Court to clarify the applicable law. District Attorney Wise indicated possible appeal and referred the matter to Attorney General Wickersham.
Churches in New Castle plan a field day for the Anti Saloon league with twenty six pulpit invitations and visiting ministers from several denominations. Notable assignments include Rev J F Baxter and Rev J Stratton at local churches, with services across morning and evening slots.
Jack Young colored who works in the tin mill was discharged by Mayor Lusk after testimony at a hearing on a strike incident. Pete Meehan was fined $10 and costs for fighting and Frank Keeling $5 for an insulting remark. Witnesses described being set upon by men prominent in the strike and beaten, with tense scenes in the mayor’s office as spectators watched.
The Brotherhood of the Grace M E Church elected officers after a meeting with a dinner by the ladies and a talk by Dr H J Whalen on Worship Versus Service of God. About 50 men attended. Officers named include President Chris Schoenfeld First vice president J A McGaughey Second vice president J H Nelson Third vice president C A Long Fourth vice president William McGaughey Secretary W T Carroll Treasurer Harry Sontag Chaplain H F Thompson.
The American Union Telephone company will rebuild its toll lines from this city to Youngstown as the first step with other lines to follow. Superintendent Crayton denies a new local exchange and confirms only toll line improvements. A conference of managers from several counties is held to discuss a new accounting system.
The Moose club announces a series of dances under its direction in the near future with exact dates to be set soon. The events aim to be highly enjoyable during the remaining winter months and are expected to attract many out of town guests. Since moving to new club rooms, the group has hosted several informal functions and intends more of the same.
The Men's Bible class of the Second United Presbyterian church will debate Are the Women More Stubborn Than the Men on February 10. Clyde Gibson and James Chambers will argue affirmative while Gamble and W W Stevenson argue negative with a third debater to be chosen later. Mrs W H Williams visits Dr and Mrs D W Medill in Youngstown this week.
J D Trelfall of New Castle will become freight agent at Pittsburg on February 1 with W A Stone of McKeesport taking his New Castle post. D G Hood rises to general agent in Pittsburg as part of a reorganizational shift by the New York Central system praising P and L E as a strong line and noting several New Castle men gaining better positions.
Thomas Thomas George Nurse and Edward Ready were indicted on Friday at Mercer for the murder of Lynn Morris the strikebreaker shot at South Sharon December 31. They will be tried separately next week.
Mrs Margaret Thomas of Morris street faced Alderman Ranney on a charge of assault and battery and disorderly conduct after witnesses said she spat on Thomas Mann a tin worker returning from Shenango mill. Mann and others described a crowd of up to 200 jeering and snowballing near Jefferson street.
City Engineer Mulholland works to estimate the price of widening South Mill street. He has received no damage figures from property owners yet and will present estimates to the council next Monday evening. Officials worry a costly project may be delayed if expenses are high amid other urgent city improvements.
A new condition in Pennsylvania arises after the 1906 Senate special session approves notary public appointments. Notaries confirmed in 1906 must be recommissioned to serve until the next Senate session as their four year terms begin to expire within three weeks. Governor Stuart will handle the recommissions statewide.
A Washington meeting led by Representatives Goebel and Foster with insurgent Hays discussed removing Joseph Cannon as speaker. The effort counts about 80 Republicans, including 50 regulars and 30 insurgents, with four Pennsylvania lawmakers named among the regulars.
Mrs Emmeline Shira 42 wife of James Shira died Tuesday night at 178 1 2 South Mill street after a week of pneumonia. She had lived in the city for some time and is survived by her husband. Funeral services are set for Friday with time to be announced.
Johnny Summers of England and Rudolph Unholz fought a 20 round draw in Sydney. The card also noted Mrs. John C. Offutt spending the day in New Brighton.
Nomination papers filed mark the start of city election battles. Five candidates seek the city assessor post from across wards while alderman races heat in Second ward and council contests continue. George G. Pearson Harvey Palmer Josiah Greer Andrew Fleckinstein Fred F. Wallace are the five for assessor with three from the south and one each from north and seventh ward. Morrison faces Daniels and English in Second ward alderman race. Green unopposed in Third ward. Phillips and Chain None in First ward school controller races. Zerner challenges Blakeley in select council as Callahan Davenport Paisley contest common council. Wilkison Ramage vie for school board in Second ward. Continued on Page Eight.
Lawrence County Pythian Outing Association members met in Alderman Ranney's office electing officers and setting July 28 as the picnic date. President James Carpenter and others were chosen. location to be Cascade Park or Conneaut Lake with Cascade Park favored for eight straight years prior.
James R. Kiskaddon, superintendent of the local gas company, says the announced price advance by Manufacturers Light and Heat along the Ohio River will not affect local patrons. The rise applies mainly to pottery towns and is for commercial use rather than domestic customers.
Leo J. Collier of the Lawrence Automobile company has purchased the interests of C. Ed. Smith and John S. Abel and will be joined by manager Gilbert G. Patterson, previously with the Olds mobile company in Pittsburgh. The firm will continue its agencies, principally Thomas and Buick cars.
