A visiting Black educator praised New Castle teachers for their frank admission of racial problems and willingness to discuss prejudice openly, saying the city is among the few he has visited with such attitude.
The Soviet Union proposed a plan calling for Israeli withdrawal to prewar borders, demilitarized zones, and reopening the Suez Canal with a UN force in Gaza and at Sharm El Sheikh. The plan, said to be similar to recent proposals, was outlined in Pravda and may be reported to the UN secretary general by Gunnar Jarring who flew to New York.
American forces report losing their 1000th helicopter to Communist gunners 35 miles from Saigon. Two pilots survived after teammates landed, loaded them on doors and ferried them to safety. A F100 fighter jet was also lost. two crewmen ejected and were uninjured.
The national NAACP directs the New Castle branch to hold a fresh election after a complaint by 32 members over the Dec 10 vote. Reasons include lack of written notice, incomplete membership list, late voting time publication, and no voter eligibility process. Henry Smith will preside. 805 members to be notified by mail. ballots with all nominees.
Blood donors are needed to supply more than 100 pints for 10 year old Mable McKinnis who was critically wounded by a shotgun blast on December 26. Her sister Mary 14 was also injured. Jameson Memorial has opened a blood bank for the child and donors may contact the facility.
President Nixon ends his first White House week by undoing several Johnson-era policies including airline route approvals and key appointments. He sets top secret National Security Council talks, revises mortgage rate policy, and creates a Cabinet Committee on Economic Policy with Agnew Burns and others.
At the Paris opening of expanded Vietnam War talks the United States urged restoring the Demilitarized Zone between North and South Vietnam as a practical first step to peace. Henry Cabot Lodge pushed for prisoner exchanges and effective monitoring of any agreement amid calls from the Viet Cong for Saigon’s overthrow and U S withdrawal.
The Nixon administration lifts FHA and VA loan ceilings from 6% to 7% causing higher monthly payments on a $20 000 30 year mortgage but expands loan availability for borrowers who could not meet higher rates. Housing secretary Romney calls it an interim emergency measure and cites prior delays.
Cloudy windy cold conditions persist across Western Pennsylvania with occasional snow flurries. Highs reach the upper teens to low 20s, and lows drop to 5 to 15, near zero in mountain valleys.
