Police pursued a hot lead in the Elizabeth Short murder case known as the Black Dahlia. A gasoline-soaked envelope addressed with clipped newspaper letters to The Los Angeles Examiner was recovered, reportedly containing items from Short’s purse and a black address book.
Rev Fr Francis M McCarter announced St Marys Church is debt free with mortgage liquidated and a healthy treasury. Since 1941 he reduced a debt of 78287 dollars while financing new stained glass totaling 10000 dollars and adjacent property purchase of 12000 dollars amid ongoing improvements.
In Philadelphia on January 25 Stephen Knapp, 37, was killed at a North Philadelphia intersection when a speeding hit run motorist in a black sedan struck him and his wife Marian, 29, who was critically injured. Walter Rowland condemned for the Deansgate murder learned in his cell that a fellow inmate serving six months for burglary confessed to the crime. The unnamed prisoner was described as Rowland's exact double and the confession will be sent to the crown prosecutor.
