Ships Buffeted by Severe Storm in New York Harbor
On January twenty five coast guardsmen saved two government harbor boats off the Battery as a violent storm hammered the harbor. The Hugh Ward broke from moorings and battered the Raritan for six hours before towing to a pier. A Jersey Central lighter sank near the Thirty Ninth street slip, endangering hundreds of ferry passengers. Several vessels were believed sunk as a seventy mile gale swept the harbor and the Atlantic until daybreak. By eight in the morning the gale eased to forty eight miles with wreckage scattered in the lower bay.
