A Portuguese traveler in Paris reports bloody Berlin riots on January 12 with mobs of men women and children in the streets. troops armed with machine guns charged the crowd wounding many and driving rioters to hospitals.
City Jewish organizations plan a nation wide relief day approved by President Wilson and Governor Brumbaugh. Proclamations set Thursday January 27 for contributions to help Jewish war sufferers. New Castle has donated $1,200 and seeks non Jewish aid. gifts accepted at Sam Klafter's Cigar Store or with local volunteers.
London reports Britain has contracted 800 ferrets to send to Flanders to curb rat infestations in trenches. Rat squads form as pests multiply. ferret prices rise from 25 cents to 1.25 dollars amid high demand.
Rev. D. P. Shaffer will preach to teen boys and girls on the subject Hear Ye Him tonight. Special music by Bible school youth and teachers, with last night featuring the junior department and Mrs. T. W. John in song. Each evening this week the church hosts divisions of the Bible school or church with sermons aimed at the young attendees.

Peoria reports rapid river rise washing out rails between Peoria and Pekin and flooding 400,000 acres. Levees from Henry to Havana failed or overflowed, many factories and homes along the Illinois river inundated. Ice blocks the Toledo Peoria and Western bridge as dynamite precautions are planned.
Rose Point Pa January 25. Farms in this vicinity are being leased and test wells will be drilled for oil and gas soon. Stewart Stoner and Fred Rhodes have leased their farms and more properties are being pursued. The community is excited by the prospect of wildcat wells and potential producers could bring an active era to the district.
Chicago January 25 The convention sub committee of the Republican National committee has finished its preliminary work. Charles D Hilles says 603 of 985 delegates will come from direct primary states this year. In Ohio Senator Burton designates all delegates and a March 15 meeting will set convention arrangements and likely announce a temporary chairman.
Mayor Newell and the four new councilmen will receive their first monthly pay from the city next Tuesday. The pay is issued monthly rather than semi monthly as for city employees and some other officials.
Richard Mayne of Vogan avenue told the council this morning that the Eastside sewer question needs action. He urged an outlet on East Washington street, blocked since last summer when the street was paved. The matter went to the committee of the whole with some councilors favoring the costly project.
At the Pennsylvania Engineering Works meeting of stockholders this morning all officials and directors were reelected for the year. The company reported strong current business and a favorable outlook with operations at high capacity and many large orders. Officers: Edward King president treasurer C L Baldwin secretary Edward W Beadel vice president and general manager J K Furst chief engineer.
Eugene Johnson of Falls street, once quarantined with smallpox at the municipal hospital, was discharged yesterday and returned home. He has recovered and is feeling well.
London report says a German Zeppelin was shot down into the North Sea not far from Nieport near the Belgian coast. Nieport lies near Ostende and Furnes in Belgium where Allied lines are positioned.

Fire swept Centralia's business district for a second time in two weeks destroying five residences. Losses totaled 15000 with no insurance as water failed to reach mains until Mt. Carmel engines arrived. Previous fire on January 15 caused 50000 in damage to homes owned by the O'Connor estate Mrs Haffey and Coddingtons.
Harry K. Thaw plans to launch as an auto salesman in New York. He is in Toledo meeting with a local car factory official, after visiting two Detroit factories. He announced he will open an automobile sales room in Gotham.
John Morra sues Carmine Antonio Di Domenico for trespass before Judge Emery. Lawyers are J. Clyde Gilfillan for the plaintiff and Walter S. Reynolds and Thomas W. Dickey for the defendant. A separate verdict in Kerr v Ewlinski awards 153.20 to the plaintiff by agreement.
Detective Arthur Sturton took a mid age man at risk from drunken exposure and a visible roll of greenbacks and placed him in the city jail for a time. He was not arrested and was kept until sober before being released to catch a train to Cleveland.
Arthur Stevens, one of three inmates who escaped from Westmoreland county jail with Charles Douglas, was recaptured by state police in an old barn six miles west of Greensburg. A county reward remains for the other two escapees.

Andy Bueie is charged with assault and battery in Alderman J H Gross office by Constan Bevan and held in the county jail for a Wednesday hearing. Nick Cobash and Mike O'Seto charged with aggravated assault and battery by Pete De Oltean and held for a Thursday hearing in default of bail. The incidents stem from injuries to De Oltean during a fight near the Roumanian club Saturday evening.
