Western Pennsylvania remains engulfed in a deadly cold spell with sub zero temperatures and widespread closures. The mercury hovered near 10 below zero and was forecast to barely rise before dropping again, stranding motorists and forcing sporadic school suspensions in Pittsburgh and surrounding areas. City plans and specs for patrol cars propose a bulletproof windshield with a through‑windshield gun port. Bids open February 3. Separately, robin sightings hint at spring while frigid weather records and local cold facts recall historic lows and suffering among people and animals.
U S weather statistics show a maximum temperature of eight degrees with a minimum of twelve below zero and no precipitation. River stage is at a low level. Year ago figures show maximum four degrees and minimum one below with one hundredth inch of precipitation.
NEW WILMINGTON Pa January 24 600 students named Governor Alfred Landon of Kansas the most desirable Republican for the G O P nomination. Landon 140 Borah 126 Hoover 76 others scattered. Just before the straw vote the student body rejected President Roosevelt for a second term by 380 to 128.
The great cold wave continues to hammer the eastern seaboard with Maine and Vermont in a fierce blizzard. New York City reports four deaths from the cold and a three-story tenement fire claims three hives as icy temperatures persist. Death toll expected to rise beyond one hundred as rural areas report further fatalities.
In Chicago and the Midwest a severe blizzard left untold suffering and millions in damage. Forecaster J R B Lloyd warned of more cold and snowstorms across the upper Mississippi valley as traffic remains disrupted. Temperatures fell to 17.1 degrees below zero with a shift toward 15 above expected by noon.
King George lie in state as thousands of mourners stream past the catafalque in Westminster Hall. By early hours 6,500 had viewed the bier and officials predict up to one million may view the spectacle as the body prepared for Windsor burial tomorrow.
A Pittsburgh court sent seven men and five women jurors to deliberate the fate of James J. Westwood, charged with the murder of his wife Martha. Judge McNaugher instructed them on first and second degree murder and voluntary manslaughter, stressing deliberation and society’s interests.

Three persons burned to death and more than twenty injured when a mid town three story tenement house was gutted by a basement origin fire. The blaze spread rapidly trapping occupants on the upper floors necessitating ladders for escape as firemen fought bitter cold around zero. Victims’ identities could not be established immediately.
Temperatures for the district were below zero with 12 below at the water works, lower than yesterday. Many schoolchildren suffered while walking to school as fingers toes and ears froze. Roads open gradually, downtown parking increases, and conditions are expected to normalize by week’s start.
Harrisburg authorities believe missing 13 year old Marjorie Richards, daughter of Dauphin County District Attorney Karl Richards, may have returned toward Pennsylvania from a hitchhiking trail to New York City. State police and missing persons agencies traced a girl matching her description after a Reading bus driver recalled a passenger in New York.

The city schools report only minor frostbite cases and some reduced attendance due to sub-zero weather. Dr. C. C. Green, superintendent, says illness was limited to mild effects and treated by health staff. no serious incidents occurred.
Addis Ababa dispatch reports government officials claiming seven hundred Italians killed in fighting southwest of Makale and eight hundred Italian troops, including many Austrian detachments, surrendered to Ethiopian forces.

City council met in the city building and took no action toward awarding a bond contract for the city treasurer. Two firms, Mc Bride & Shannon and another represented by James A. Rugh, submitted bonds recently.
Death record lists Mes. James A. McCracken of Mercer and Rev. William Wendell Duff resident of Mogu Panjab India along with Mrs. Laura Etta Johnston of New Wilmington.
In Chicago a 70 year old junk dealer Joseph Scarr and his 65 year old sister Anna died of suffocation after a fire trapped them in a wooden garage used as their home and office. An overheated stove was blamed for the blaze. The deaths raise Chicago’s toll from overheated stoves and furnaces to six as sub zero temperatures gripped the city since Tuesday night.
News comes by cable that Reverend William Wendell Duff 40 missionary in Mogu Punjab India died from peritonitis after an appendicitis operation. He was a Mt Jackson and New Castle graduate class of 1918 and Westminster College 1922, served in France in WWI, and married Helen Anderson in 1923. He leaves widow Helen two sons with mother, and his parents and siblings.
Carl E. Paisley was named president of the New Castle Credit Exchange at its annual meeting in the Greer building. Fifteen directors attended as new officers and managers were announced, including First Vice President John S. Abel and Mayor Charles W. McGrath.
President Roosevelt vetoed the immediate cash Veterans Bonus, but Congress overrode the veto for the second time in a year. The House voted 324 to 61 to enact the bill despite the veto, and Roosevelt sent a brief message to be read in both chambers.
Plans have started for an industrial exhibit in New Castle where local plants will display products. A meeting is set for Tuesday afternoon January 28 at 4 o clock in the New Castle Chamber of Commerce rooms to finalize details and set a date. Ralph W. Bolsinger is chairman with Ross Kirkpatrick as vice chairman. Chamber president L G Genkinger pledges cooperation.
